Good shelving can be hard to find. We spent months searching for a shelving solution to our awkwardly shaped walls and eventually had a friend design and build a custom set. Although frustrating, that search gave us a good sense of what's out there, from wall-mounted systems to hardwood bookcases.

  1. Smart Furniture (Online): Always on the lookout for semi-custom shelving options that work for small apartments, we were happy to be pointed toward Smart Furniture. Their grid-style shelving is of a simple design and comes in versatile sizes that could cover an entire wall or just a nook.
  2. Vitsoe (Various Locations/Online): Every client we have introduced Vitsoe shelving to has wanted to use it, even after they realized how expensive it was. Most of them were able to jigger their budget to pull it off. The rest? They're waiting.
  3. Atlas Industries (New York/Online): Combining the strength and thin lines of steel with the warmth and texture of wood, the AS4 shelving is the perfect solution for a modern apartment without going all hi-tech and industrial. It is totally adjustable and expandable from bookshelves to workspace to storage.
  4. IKEA (Various Locations/Online): Certain favorite products that show up again and again on the pages of Apartment Therapy include the Expedit shelves, Lack shelves, and Billy bookcases.
  5. The Grove Unfinished Furniture (Online): They have a slew of unfinished, affordable, hardwood shelving. Though traditional in style, many of these pieces could find a place in a modern home. And since they're unfinished, the end look of each piece is really up to you.
  6. The Container Store (Various Locations/Online): This is the sole U.S. retailer for the popular Elfa shelving system. They also carry other modular and wall-mounted systems, and they have an annual shelving sale, when they usually offer 25% off.
  7. C&H Distributors (Milwaukee/Online): "The Storage and Handling Leader" sells heavy duty equipment and industrial supplies, including Metro shelving. If you're into an industrial aesthetic, unique storage solutions for the home — or are currently furnishing a warehouse — this is an interesting catalog to check out.
  8. ISS Designs (San Clemente/Online): ISS Designs, or Infinite Storage Solutions, is located in Richard Nixon's old hometown of San Clemente, California, and they offer very stylish, minimal and modern shelving that can be configured in any number of ways. Like Elfa, Vitsoe and Rakks, their system is based on standards and brackets that easily lock into place and can be mounted at any height.
  9. Design Public (San Francisco/Online): Design Public is an online store founded on two principles: 1) find the best new talent before anyone else does and 2) offer the best customer service around. They carry a large selection of modern shelving by Blu Dot, Offi, Brave Space, and other emerging and established designers.
  10. Spacify (Online): Spacify is an online/catalogue only operation that runs out of Redwood City, California and sells everything from children's bedding to office furniture. They carry a lot of Italian shelving, and you'll find modern styles in wood, glass, and metal.
