I rounded up some usual suspects for this list last year and not a lot has changed for 2009. Toto and Duravit still lead the pack. • Toto Aquia
Gotta add the Toto Aquia to the list. It's relatively new, but it's available. Small tank, very nice design, and also a water-saving dual-flush model (so it has a smaller, 0.9 gal flush as well as a regular). Pilgrim
• Kohler Rialto

The best small medium priced toilet I've heard of is the Toto ultimate (about 250$ 2 1/2 years ago). I polled residents in my building when I needed to change to a low flow model upon purchasing a unit I'd been renting and this model won. - Jonathan D.

i'm a big fan of the look of the duravit toilets (we have 2)... we have a stark-3 which is very similar to the happy-d... one thing to note: i find it doesn't flush well... not nearly as well as the toto toilets (by a large margin... and we've had 2 (in our old place)). upon inspection of the duravit and comparison, it seems the "neck" (where the toilet outlet meets the floor flange) is actually smaller than most others and there's actually a lip where "stuff" gets "snagged"... odd that is isn't a smooth transition. net result: while it looks wonderful, it fails more often than not at what a toilet is s'posed to do.
Does that model really have to be sitting on there?
I just installed the Toto Eco Supreme in my tiny downstairs bathroom, and I love it -- the look and the functionality.
I have the Toto Eco Drake upstairs, and it's been fantastic. It doesn't have the low profile of the one-piece Supreme, but the footprint is still very small.
I also wonder about the use of models in advertisements or promotional materials about things like plumbing, hardware, paint, etc. It just seems silly.
Why don't we have toilets on the wall?
Oh man - the picture of the hot chick posing on the toilet is my favorite part about this. The sign of a truly great model is one who can pose doing something completely ridiculous and still look like she thinks what she's doing is perfectly normal and even glamorous.
I've had my Toto Acquia II for 2 weeks now and love it. The only thing is that the flush button is on top of the tank - and you need to press down for a couple of seconds for a successful flush. Small price for a cute toilet that is low flush AND gets you a $100 credit from the LADWP...
Oh, that poor model--imagine her getting the call from her agency: "They need you to sit on a toilet in heels and a cocktail dress. And they will style your hair so that it looks like someone left a giant turd on the top of your head."
Last year I bought a Kohler that bears a striking resemblance to the Duravit Happy D. Unfortunately, my super found that it couldn't be installed as I'd have to refit the pipes in the wall. A no-no in my building :(
Our family loves the Veneto toilet by Porcher too! It's in a 1/2 bath that gets used a lot by kids that sometimes use way too much TP and then only needs to be cleared a couple of times per year. It is also very comfortable, as some seats just aren't. We liked it so much that we purchased an additional one when Expo went out of business and will go in a remodeled master bath someday.
Lol!! purlgreyhound...that's funny. I have a Toto drake and it's very good....just one flush regardless.... I would buy another Toto for the upstairs bathroom and I like the one piece models. It uses less water and never have to flush twice.
I got the dual-flush Duravit Happy D for about $550 (from Park Slope Plumbing Supply) last year. Building's plumbing requires back-outlet toilets, and this worked. Tank is not inside wall.
That woman's left arm is scary looking--it looks way too long.

Somewhere in the midst of magazine tears over the years, I have a photo from British Elle Decor of a stainless commode that utilized the back of the unit (typically the tank) as a small sink. I remembering thinking that was so brilliant for a compressed space.
Does anyone else remember that design or know the model/manufacturer?
I think it was German.

I have a caroma, not sure which model... I won it in a raffle at a water conservation event! I'm happy with the dual flush technology.
