My husband and I just spent WEEKS searching for this exact thing!! We'd had the Mandal from IKEA for five years and when we moved into our new condo last month, we had to leave it at the old apartment- it was built in the room and not coming out. Now we want to upgrade to real wood and it's been really tough to find something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. (After all, we did just buy a condo.) We finally lucked out at a local place called The Mill Store. If you're in the Boston area and looking for solidly built, solid wood furniture, check it out: http://www.millstores.com/
We found a queen bed frame with 6 drawers of storage for $469 and we're having them stain it for us and deliver. They've always got coupons on their website, too. We scored 30% off! (No, I do not work for them!) We already owned 4 other pieces from them that we're really happy with.
I love that frame from Room & Board, but most people I know can't afford to spend that much on a bed frame.
I can see that last bed being perfect for a studio apartment. Not only does it add a lot of extra storage, but you could use it to add separation between sleeping and living areas.
we have the Mandal, but the problem is, having a hubby that's 6'3", a dog who is a bedhog, plus me on a queen size bed isn't all that much roomy. I wish Ikea offered a king sized mandal frame! most frames that do offer a king size cost a grip!
Sure beats sliding plastic storage containers under the bed! Here are a few more options in hardwood. And notice some of the Copeland ones have a unique nightstand option that doesn't interfere with the under bed drawers opening.

For any Australians that are visiting, there is a gorgeous bed from a Queensland based company - they use Australian designer David Hardwick to design their collections.
The bed is called Plank and it's made of solid blackwood - really gorgeous lines, I totally have a big crush on it. Anyway it has really roomy draws underneath, but still feels really earthy and organic.

Forgot to say - they are called HB&Co! Based in CQ
It's all moot if your space is too small to pull out the drawers. Yep, it happened to me. Forever be forward thinking...
