When I moved into my new dorm freshman year, the first thing I did was make the bed. The bright color of my new patterned comforter battled the blandness of the room's off-white walls and standard-issue brown furniture, making it automatically feel more comfortable, personal and ultimately like home. Bedding is one of the most important choices you can make when you're shopping for back-to-school decor, so pick something that makes you really, really happy.
Here are some recent favorite picks that are readily available from well-known stores, and almost all include either a comforter or duvet cover, and some shams, for under $100. If it's a cover you're interested in, IKEA sells simple comforter inserts between $8 and $50. All prices are for twin size sets, unless otherwise noted.
This blue comforter set from Target is reversible with dots on one side and stripes on the other. It's available for $34.39 in four different colors and comes with shams.
West Elm is selling some cute floral duvet covers and shams for $43 combined. The brushstroke style is available in three different colors and patterns.
IKEA's bright SOMMAR check bedding set is only $14.99 and includes a duvet cover and sham.
I love Urban Outfitter's Locust Inigo Hand Duvet Cover for $79 (also lead photo above). The shams are a little pricey at $39, so I'd pair it with some regular pillowcases instead to save some money.
Betsey Johnson's Va Va Voom Cotton Set is a super bold orange and pink floral, available from Overstock. A twin is $99 and comes with comforter and shams.
$89 will buy you a duvet cover and sham from Land of Nod. To get the layered, multi-patterned look above however, you'll have to spend more.
PBTeen has these great mini dot duvet covers and shams for about $85. For a little less you can do pillowcases instead.
You can't go wrong with this classic rugby stripe set by Nautica for Wayfair. It just squeaks in there for $99.99 and comes in coral or navy.
And one more floral pattern (which I love with the non-traditional navy background) by Teen Vogue at Bed, Bath & Beyond.
