My best thrift store find ever technically happened in two trips. On one expedition in Dallas, I came across the Royal Mariner typewriter, sitting dejectedly underneath a few old VHS players, in near perfect condition. For $12 I brought him home, and began the collection I have today. A couple of months later, 1700 miles away in San Francisco, I came across the Royal Fiesta, and solidified my love affair with typewriters.
The Mariner and the Fiesta were fast friends, and I loved using them to write letters to friends and notes to roommates. I didn't need two, but darned if they weren't the cutest pair ever! My brother delighted in the fact that I moved countless times, lugging two "antiquated" pieces of technology around, and yet I didn't own a television or a microwave. But I loved them, and kept them alive and useful! I will not be selling these two, but I started noticing that typewriters like these were selling for $50-$150 each on eBay and Etsy! I paid less than $30 for the pair!
From then on I kept my eyes open for others on my regular thrifting adventures. I've found quite a few, although they are fewer and farther between, nowadays. I've let go of some of them, but I'm pretty sure I'll hold on to these two.
What's the best thrift store, garage sale or craigslist find that you've discovered? Were there any purchases that spawned a collection?
