While I would give my left arm to have a private backyard, for now a plot of land where I can grow succulents will do just fine. If you recall, all I had before was a stoop--so I've definitely graduated (not to mention, there isn't a lot of upkeep).
Before envisioning anything, I called in the big guns (Barbara Jarvik who has created her own succulent paradise). She suggested I keep the pre-existing field of wild mint--and I'm glad I did. Now anytime we're making mojitos or mint juleps, all I have to do is wander outside and pick a fresh bundle. The concrete pavers were also present when I moved in but they were randomly placed throughout the area. On my dad's suggestion I made them flush with the ground, then picked up some moss to grow in between each square.
To add a dash of coziness, I've taken succulents and planted them in pots (or in the ground) around the perimeter. And yesterday, I got busy assembling my new picnic table (an easier task than I expected). Eventually, I'd love to stain and treat the new purchase or paint it a playful color. But for now, I'm just looking forward to a long summer of dining al fresco.
