Your bed doesn't have to be the biggest design element in the bedroom (just check out the second image above!). Large art packs a correspondingly big punch and immediately works as a focal point and visual anchor.
Consider using it over the bed in place of or in complement to a headboard. Especially if you live in an earthquake-prone area, know that big art also works well as a balance when hung to the side or on an opposite wall.

Sheex Bedding
The second picture is just a little bit of overkill for my tastes. But #6 - wow! Even in shades of gray, the texture just makes that pop out from the wall and grab your attention! Love it!
Love the bed on #1 and I like the arrangement on #3. As a kid, I had a bookcase opposite to my bed, and luckily, when the earthquake stroke I had just gotten out of bed, otherwise, the heavy load that fell on my bed would have found me there. After living in earthquake-prone areas for most of my life, I would never consider hanging a heavy object or artwork behind my bed. That said, they do look good!
I really like the framing of the smaller piece in photo number five. The frame and matting give the image mass in this airy space. Thank you for the great ideas, AT!
I really like the #2 painting - it makes a statement even though the furniture is simple and there is not much color!
LOVE that carpet in #7...anyone have a source for it?
the bed and art are fantastic!
I have loved #6 since I first saw it quite a while ago. Definitely would love to copy it. I do find some of the art a little too powerful to sleep comfortably nearby.
Does anyone know where the bed is from in #1?
Oh I love pretty much all of these rooms, but I wonder how restful they are. That said, I wouldn't complain about having #1 as my bedroom.
We placed a large painting right next to another very large painting in our bedroom. Prior to that there had been lots of negative space in the room and the large painting seemed happy all alone on that wall. However, a recent purchase of a large diptych meant that something had to give. So now we have two very large paintings on the wall adjacent to the bed, with smaller paintings on other walls in the room. I hesitated because I though it would be too much, but now I think, "too much of a good thing is wonderful".
Can anyone source the bed in number 1, or something similar? I'd be very grateful, it's exactly what I've been looking for!
The bed is not my taste, but #4 is an amazing combination. Everything works together so well. And it's so Mad Men. I would be proud to say I had decorated that space.
I now feel justified having that gigantic painted Chinese folding screen hung above my bed. :)
Hey, who is the photo of in #7 - above the bed??
I love #2, but the link just takes me to Martha's homepage and I can't figure out how to find this picture and an associated article there. Any info on whether this was a craft with a tutorial on her site or something that can be purchased?
the bed in #1 seems to be the mills bed from bddw: http://www.bddw.com/furniture/bed/mills.html
I just love big art and #6 is my favorite here. My challenge has always been finding unique and original larger art pieces for my projects. I did come across a gallery that specializes in just Big Art so I added it to my favorite bookmarks.

Thank you for the inspiring article and pictures!
I am a huge fan of using abstract art to create depth and add bold color and interest without making the room to "theme-y." It also allws for clean simplicity with the bedding, which I find to be more relaxing.
This gallery on Cape Cod has some very cool abstract pieces: www.dougjohnsongallery.com.
Even with small space, big art works really well. Small space + small art = cluttered dollhouse. Great examples- I am inspired!!
