I just spotted Billy Cotton's house over on Domino, and I'm kind of obsessed. It's one of those spaces that defies categorization... a little bit eclectic, a little bit modern, a little bit like the deliciously booky home of a college professor. (Don't college professors always have the coolest homes? Maybe I'm a little biased because I went to architecture school.) Everything has its own prescence, but everything hangs together in a meant-to-be kind of way.
In the living room (which Billy says is his favorite space in the house), an antique theatrical backdrop sets the stage for a mix of modern and antique furnishings. I love the richness and warmth that the tapestry and the oriental rug add to the room, making it both energizing and cozy.
And then there's this beautiful guest bedroom. Billy has chosen not to add art to the walls, so the space is all about the tension between the antique chair and the super-modern plywood bed. Painting the ceiling, radiator, and walls all the same color lends a soothing feel. It's an odd combination, but somehow it works.
