If you're not up for real pets yet, paper birds should do just fine. A painted, thrifted birdcage creates a unique accent piece for a child's room.
We found the idea over at Makes and Takes. Paint the birdcage(in this case from white to a sea blue), and then make your paper birds out of a die cut and some pretty scrapbook paper like this one. Simple, different, and pretty too!
