We like the sculptural look of this birdhouse designed by Hannes Freising. It's made of several flat metal sheets, and will acquire a rusty patina after exposure to the elements. Yet we do have to wonder how practical it is. We'll admit we know little about birds, but we assume they like cozy birdhouses where they can build nests?

yeah, birds will not be into that flat bottom at all. birds like that shown prefer the classic house-with-a-hole style house to nest, and even those that built a nest more out in the open will look for something with more cover, or at least sides. looks like it would have a better chance being practical flipped upside-down.
think of it as a bird feeder, not a house
I took a discarded birdcage (round and tall) and twisty tied the door open and put corn inside. Soon I had Squirrels in a cage.
I think it is pretty darn fun to make the squirrels do silly things for food.
They prefer corn and/or peanuts over the sunflower seeds. Corn at the feed store is $5 for 50 lbs. Pretty cheap to feed them.
I also have a squirrel whirl. A 4 armed spinning device that holds corn cobs on the ends. They can have food, but they have to climb and dangle to get it.
the last two comments were great.
