When it comes to filing at home, we think Bisley filing cabinets are perfectly suitable. You can buy them extra small if that's all you need or go big if you have more filing needs at home. We personally love the ones with the shallow drawers.
They come in lots of colors that are sure to match your decor (and a stripped-down metal finish). Plus, they're available retail at The Container Store, so it's super easy to get your hands on them.
We know someone who bought a bunch of the shallow-drawered ones in the metal finish and used them as pedestals for "hollow wood door" desktops along an entire wall of their apartment. It at once gave them tons of storage space and worktop space. Unfortunately, they've since moved so we can't provide pics, but hopefully you get the idea...

And for the IKEA set (self included), there's HELMER:

LOVE these. We have them at work and they are both beautiful and functional (especially if you have a lot of different kinds of stuff to sort -- it's great having a drawer for sharpies, a drawer for china markers, a drawer for seals, stamps, inkpads, exacto knives and blades, etc).
The ikea version is also quite nice, and much, much cheaper.
I bought the Helmer secondhand for twenty dollars because I needed each drawer for different cords and plugs for Ipods, cell phones, electic toothbrushes and cameras. The drawers do not slide out like the newer/better file cabinets. This is a very basic drawer set up. Where the drawers are sized to fit the openings so just be advised.
p.s. the other file cabinet in the room is the pretty Trig from CB2 and that one I heartily recommend:

I saw these at container store a few weeks ago and considered getting two of them for night stands.
SPHH - That's been my plan for a while, but they've been on backorder at container store online and there isn't a brick and mortar in my vicinity. And I'm secretly hoping that we'll find two suitable pieces at a garage sale before it comes time to order them.
Check out the plastic drawer inserts - there are a variety of sizes which can be used to organize virtually anything small: office supplies, jewelry, paper, etc. I've had one in my office and one that houses my tribal jewelry collection for about 12 years, and they're like new.
HomeDecorators.com has several pieces with narrow drawers, some much wider. They quality doesn't compare - wood and fiberboard - but they are inexpensive and may fit some needs or spaces that these done.
I love these so much and have been drooling over one for my studio for a couple of years now. (To store jewelry inventory, of which I have tons!) Too bad they're out of my price range.
I have several for my home office. The Bisley cabinets definitely look nice, but the drawers are not practical. They do not open all they way.
