What goes with every color scheme, is timeless yet on trend, effortlessly gender neutral, and black and white all over? Newborns are colorblind for approximately three months and do best with high contrast images viewed at close range. Their brand new brains are working hard and black and white plays well to their cognitive development and visual abilities.
Although black and white toys, books and objects are an obvious choice for baby's first stimuli, they are surprisingly hard to find. Etsy is always a great resource for custom orders, or you can download black and white images for DIY projects from Jan Andrea and Parents Magazine. Here are a few readymade favorites.
1 Tana Hoban board books, from $6.99. The late filmmaker and photographer whose work was showcased in galleries and museums worldwide turned out over 50 beautiful children's books. Black on White, White On Black and Black & White are gorgeous, wordless books perfectly suited for infant eyes.
2 Wimmer-Ferguson Infant Stimulation Toys, from $15. This line of toys is specially designed to appeal to newborn eyes. The Double-Feature Baby Mirror (pictured), Car Seat Gallery and Mind Shapes are well loved by babies at home and on the road.
3 Flensted Mobiles, from $30. From a crib's eye view, the simple black forms of the Shoal of Fish, Cats and Seahorse mobiles provide endless entertainment when seen against the backdrop of a white ceiling.
4 Wee Gallery Art Cards, $12.95. These art cards helped make tummy time much more bearable for my son back in the day. They look great on a wall or can be used as flash cards for older kids. Pick from the original, garden, jungle, sea, farm, dino, woodlands, pets or black and white collections.
5 Art For Baby, $19.99. This board book features black and white images from 11 well-known artists including Takashi Murakami, Josef Albers, Keith Haring and Damien Hirst. The large format (9.7x9.5") and contemporary content create a "baby's first Art Forum" feel.

These are some great shower gift ideas, thanks!!
We found a PDF on-line (for free!) that we printed and propped up at the end of our infant son's crib. Here's a photo of him enjoying it at about 3 weeks old:

I found it so hard to find anything black and white when my daughter was a newborn. Great ideas!
Great ideas! I've never seen the board books....they look great!
If you're not opposed to involving the television, Wee See DVDs have some neat music too, from what I can tell.
These are all great. And as a children's librarian, I'll also recommend my favorite black and white board books I always give at baby showers:
Petr Linenthal's - these are much more interactive than Tana Hobens'

My sister bought the Wee Gallery Art Cards for my daughter and they were a huge hit. Great ideas!
This is an awesome post! Ever since out five month old Leah started taking to black and white we've put it everywhere. We crafted the black and white headboard here just to help her sleep at night:

I love the Flensted Mobiles. Thanks for the tummy time idea!
Love this idea - I have several showers coming up and I love to give books - just added these to my list!
Good round up--I am surprised at how hard this stuff can be to find...
Thanks for all of the great comments!
@lisamfb - lucky Oliver!
@mere1975 - I will have to check out those dvds.
@herland - I'm 30 weeks pregnant with twins so this is a timely recommendation. We will be sure to add some Linenthal books to our library.
@PuzzlingPostsDad - lovely headboard.

How perfect. I am just pulling ideas for my nephew's nursery - the black and white fish mobile would be perfect. Thanks.

We put this Blik alphabet up above the dresser/changing table and our 7 week old daughter loves it. (She coos at the vulture every diaper change). http://www.whatisblik.com/shop/alphabet-zoo-re-stik
Just ignore that in their photo they have "Y X Z"
Um, on the DVD thing, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no tv of any kind for kids under two.
Great ideas~! I loved this book as well - mainly black and white - I Kissed the baby by Mary Murphy - http://www.amazon.com/I-Kissed-Baby-Mary-Murphy/dp/0763624438/ref=pd_sim_b_17
