Dark, moody, zen, gothic or chic — there are lots of ways to describe black bedrooms. Painting a room black takes guts, but the results can be pure nocturnal perfection. When it comes to an all black bedroom, do you consider it a sanctuary or mortuary?

just yucky
You're always so rude, SwedishChef! I feel like I'm constantly pointing out your nastiness. Perhaps you should consider this before commenting...
I like the last one; it was in Domino (the woman from J Crew I think).
My son has a black bedroom, and it is very fun (well, only 2 walls are black), very colourful.
The first two are terribly sexy -
I could move right into either of those rooms just fine...
It is hard to tell what the effect of light is on the photograph. I worry that painting a bedroom too dark will make it seem small (and dark). I think I'd prefer charcoal to black in pretty much all situations.
Does anyone know where the lamp (the suspension) comes from, on the first picture?
3 is neat, except the bed looks like the sheets are garbage bags.
There's just something wrong with 5.
Picture #4 looks like a crime scene.
I love the first two. I'm amazed how light and airy they look even with the black walls. I also covet the lamp in the first picture.
these don't work for me at all, and I generally love black. But these are too much, esp #1 halloween.
I'm not at all sure that you get a good sense of what these feel like just from a photo. They're being professionally lit in these photos and they're still very dark. I doubt that it's possible to get enough light into them to make them feel like something other than a cave. Years ago, I did a sewing project on black velour; I still remember how it didn't matter how much light I put on the project, it wasn't enough to see it well.
Patrick, you beat me to it. Looks like a body wrapped up in that comforter.
You know... in almost every case, I think the rooms would've worked perfectly with ANY favorite color... the highlight maybe shouldn't be on "black", but on the fact that the rooms' configuration stands strong regardless of the palette.
Quite so, Patrick -
But I thought I'd try to be kind today so I didn't say anything...
;-)
I could swear that we've been subject to number 4 from a different angle earlier this week, in a post about wallpaper... anybody else recognize it?
I immediately started thinking of black clothing and how quickly lint, hair, and other bits of the day seem to show. Black bedding and upholstery must be a lot of work to keep clean. But walls in a deep color, maybe not quite black, look great with lighter bedding. The focal point should be the bed. I like for everything else to fade into the background.
I really like #9's bedspread and ottoman.
#2 has me swooning.
Another name for the post could be "Drug Lord Dens".
#1 and #2 are great.
I like #7 and #8. I think black would be nice (or any dark color) in a library. It would add to the moody coziness to want to curl up in a comfortable chair and read a book.
They all seem very dangerous places to be. If I were to go home with someone and that's where they brought me, I'd be thinking: do I have a Hannibel Lechter sitch on my hands here?
#4 looks more like a black and white photo than a bedroom that is decorated in black and white.
The headboard in 6 & 7 looks like part of the Scarface set...
#2 - low flat bedside table, the patterned flooring and the chandelier, I want to eat them.
how's #4 even profiled? unmade bed's supposed to make it look casual or something? you guys are right looks like a crime scene from The Mentalist. Just add blood written note on da wall..
I like these very much for the drama that they create. Also, I agree that SwedishChef really does need to moderate the nastiness.
Yuck - #2: you know your furniture is too low when the photographer has to lay on the floor to take the picture #3: nice boxspring & wrinkled duvet. I think that's my EX-boyfriend's place #4: No, wait. There's his place. Make your bed! #5: does Walmart make plastic beds now. I think I'm going to be sick. #9: mismatch heaven. Is that a pelt on the one nightstand? #1 & #10: These are the only 2 that use black right. You have to have a large room, plenty of light, and a good dose of white (or natural wood) to pull off black. Some things just do not work out against the grain. Sorry
For some reason #3 makes me laugh. It's like a cliché of a just-out-of-college single guy's room--especially the art. I think #4 actually belongs to #3's roommate, but lacking the reputation as a "panther" he doesn't score nearly as many chicks as his friend.
would love to know where to get the chandelier from in the second picture top row
i think it's really cool, but more suitable for houses with ceiling heights more than 3m, or even better if you have double volume ceilings.
also it has to be balanced with an adequate amount of daylight/lighting so that everything doesn't appear to be too dark.
:)
very depressing...
