What is romantic? What is sexy? When I met Diane von Furstenberg last Friday morning, she said a bedroom is sexiest "when the lights are out." If this is true, then there's nothing sexier than Cindy Gallop's "Black Apartment," which is in a permanent state of darkness. If you don't know about this remarkable design achievement, which has so much bling it will shake your 'thing, check out the video below (with great usable tips), and all the links I've pulled.

I love her style - Everything is beautiful - could I live in it - not sure but maybe.
I first saw this space about two years ago and instantly fell in love. I think nothing of painting walls black, as it adds sophistication, power and intrigue. It's the perfect color for strong personalities.
Interesting, but I couldn't live with all that black long term.
Does anyone know what song is playing in the background of the video?
It's really fun but day in and day out? She seems very happy with it and that is what we're all striving for.
Absolutely love this. Just as long as the rest of the house is light and airy...
Ditto for the music - who is it? Love everything about Cindy Gallop! I am a light person, but if you're going black, this is the way to do it. Obviously she is attached to each and every item in the apartment and as she said - there is a story behind each item, which I believe makes a home. Seems she is quite the cougar deluxe. Go girl! Love the way the light bounces off the walls!
FANTASTIC!! Fearless, sophisticated and ultra sexy! What is typically thought of as "good taste" is way overrated. We need way more chainsaws and alligators in the world.
Incredibly dramatic. Very interesting space, but as others have stated, not sure I could live with all that black; prefer to wear it.
I could happily live without the stuffed animals, I don't care that some are gilted in gold, that actually makes it creepier and somewhat more barbaric.
However, the color & light and layout of the apartment kicks ass.
The song is "I'm Like a Ninja" by Darling Cait. Could not ask for a better tune to show off that amazing space.
I love it. Not sure if I could deal with it long term, but I do love the overall aesthetic. Maybe good for a hotel?
WOW! This is glamorous, chic, unconventional, iconoclastic, inventive, gutsy, amazing! If you've got the balls to do it, then this is the way!
Love it! I could totally live with this (minus the taxidermy items) and I am now considering doing it on a smaller scale for my master bath, as a start. That gloss black reflects everything soooo beautifully. Gorgeous.
Very pretty, very sexy and all but this girl Cindy takes a man there and he will not find time enough to run away. It is scary... She needs to kick it down a notch PRONTO! It sends the wrong desperate signals.
Where those Karma "Shoe"tras??? I swear HAHAHA If they were not shoes designed of people gettin it, im pretty sure there where little figures getting it on as she described her shoe collection.
I love black and think its very interesting, dont think I could live in it but it is very very cool
Creepy....

cute. :)
Normally I'm all about light and airy... but dang this room is turning me on!
Kudos to AT for posting something that's not stark white or boring gray! This apartment isn't really my style but it's such a refreshing change.
I think I'm in love!
Yeah, black is fitting if you're going to have a fur rug. What a waste of a wild animal's life. What's up with AP and fur lately?
Its an interesting apartment seems to showcase her things and lifestyle well. Must be amazing at night and a sexy place for dinner parties.
I really loved seeing the Village People in the video, good insert.
Damn, that is fresh!
If I did not have kids, wife and puppy ... I would get right on it, turning my house to resemble her apartment.
Guys - many thanks for all the comments and appreciation!
To the large number of you who wonder whether this is livable with long term - my visitors always remark on how much more comfortable and homey my apartment is in real life compared to the impression gained from pictures. So yes, it is very livable with (and I adore it!).
@missskitttin Um, I'm happy to say that my dating track record confirms quite the opposite :)
@coletta (rhymes with velveeta) I have considered that in the past, but it would involve wearing a brace for a year or so, and to be perfectly honest, it's never affected my life at all, nor has it in any way impeded my ability to date whom I want to, so...I'm going with what Nature intended me to have :)
And on the taxidermy front - I admit freely I'm a fan, and should just say also that all my stuffed animals/rugs are antique/extremely old and bought at junk shops and flea markets.
Thank you for posting, ApartmentTherapy!

Love, love, love it! Fabulous! I would like there in a sweet second!
Cindy's place is beyond amazing -- which I know first-hand, because she generously allowed me to film a series of satirical book trailers and media literacy videos in The Black Apartment. Here are a few links and photos:

I was so excited to see this posted- especially since Cindy commented on it herself. Pamela Love and Cindy definitely hold the highest spot in my love for The Selby. And no, I don't think this is very AT typical to post, but I'm much more of a fan now that they have.
Much love to women who are confident in their sexuality and show it in their homes!
Love it!
Why does a woman need to be a conventional beauty to have an exciting and fulfilling life? It seems to me that Ms.Gallop lives in a space that reflects her adventurous and interesting life. So much more intriguing than the "Normal" AT posts. So people, please refrain from commenting on someones physical attributes and stick to critiques on the space as presented.
Striking. It might be cool to stay in a black hotel room for like one night. That's about all I could take. Those windows look like a breath of fresh air for real.
I totally love this apartment. I want to be Cindy.
Looking at Cindy's apartment all I could think of was Mango from SNL, "Too sexy! Too sexy!"
I've seen Cindy's place featured both in print and on TV. While not everything about it is to my taste (which is fine, it's not my home), there is plenty to take away from it. It is pretty amazing.
@mslewis, you arse, she is not unattractive or overweight (even if she was, so what). love this unconventional house and its owner.
A work of art! (not a "small space" though...)
Mslewis, what a terribly mean thing to say. She is NOT overweight or unattractive, and even if she were, what would that have to do with how she lives and enjoys her life? And why on earth would you ever think that was an appropriate thing to say?
I love this apartment for the owner. It's beautifully done, so eclectic and interesting. I personally wouldn't be able to live in such a dark space all the time. I do agree with her though that all white is very convential and maybe boring... I still love it though. Funny, I wear black almost every day, but I don't own any black "stuff".
Oh, and I think the taxidermied stuff and rugs are great since it's all antique. Better it be used than go to waste, no? And this is coming from a vegetarian.
Great tour! Nice to see something different!
Wow. Like living in a museum!
Fine, I watched the video. I do like the space. But as I said, the fur is disgusting. I did not realize it was antique. However, furriers are lying to people these days to sell their product. It is impossible to know for sure where your money goes after it buys these products.
The fur trade is so vile and heinous as to warrant disgust even towards used fur. If it's so "natural", then let it biodegrade somewhere. Apartment Therapy really needs to make clear their position on fur, and if they're not against it, take down your Green blog. Please.
Cindy you are as arrestingly glamorous as ever. This is gonna make me smile all day. Off to google your TED presentations--you rock!
This is pretty amazing. Very sexy. And everyone looks better in dark rooms with low light. :-)
This is DOPE! I couldn't live in an all black apartment but you've got to appreciate her sense of style and drama. And really what's more gangsta than a Gucci Chainsaw!!!!
A bit desperate. More mausoleum than museum. I absolutely adore eccentric people, but not when they're painfully embarassing about their age. She has the chops for the decorating (sans fur: I don't care if it's antique, it's still a tad disgusting) and should showcase that, not her, uh, needs.
Ok, honestly, I too wondered why she would not get her teeth fixed...but I have an unnatural fixation with straight white teeth thanks to my own 2.5 years with braces as a teen (think: Ugly Betty), so I definitely don't mean it as an offense. The bottom line is this lady has got some real serious personal style...and must be living some kind of fabulous life to go with it. A Gucci Chainsaw?! Say "Word"!
For all those literally equating her worthiness to have great furniture, art, (and sex) with her looks ..."Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate!". You've won the award. (Thank you, Dave Chappelle!)
Really guys? What do her looks have to do with her apartment?
I rather like her unique style. And not one "keep calm" poster in sight!
I have a some walls in my home and love them. They are stencilled with a damask pattern in gloss varnish. Puny compared to this space though.
Your home looks fabulous Ms Cindy
Mskitten! You jealous bitch! Everything about Ms. Gallop is top notch except for her trainer. Lol. The brick ceiling of her old loft was amazing and a lot more menacing. Pronto.
