For awhile now I've been enamored with a very particular orangey-red, a vibrant poppy hue. I've bought tomato-red nail varnish, a shirt, a skirt, and a sash (got to have a sash!), but would trade them all for these amazing vintage dishes of my mom's.
When I saw them in my parents kitchen I freaked out a bit over their perfect combination of cream, black, & red, and their feminine yet restrained style. If only there was a dress to match. Of course my mom offered the dishes to me on the spot, but I think they belong where they are. And yes, that is the mixer she uses- she's on the hunt for the original bowl, but in the meantime this floral bowl is doing the job beautifully.
Some other tomato-red favorites:
- Someday, someday, this "Angel of the North" lithograph by Sanna Annukka will preside over my home!
- I fell pretty hard for this delightful screenprinted tea towel featuring classic British cakes.
- During the rainy season here in San Francisco, this indoor/outdoor bench would be the perfect spot to put on boots and generally get yourself together.
- Ah, the lovely Hungarian Doll Project, painstakingly screen printed, stitched, and embroidered by Sarajo Friedan, one of Reform School's students-of-the-month.

Wow! I inherited three serving platters with this exact design from my grandmother!
Do you have any more information on them? I only have the platters, but if I had plates, I'd use them.
The pattern is Red Poppy manufactured by Hall China.
orangey-red is my favorite color!
Andregirl- ooh, I bet the serving platters are gorgeous! I called my mom, and the bottoms of the dishes all read "Hall's Superior Quality Kitchenware Made in the USA".
Thanks!
Tess
The poppy pattern is actually one of the most popular patterns available at Flea Markets/Antique Malls, and is highly collectible. Every time I go antiquing I see at least 5 or 6 dishes with that pattern. It wouldn't be hard to start your own collection!
i have been all about orange-red and oranges lately! i made a rug, blanket and curtains in those colors!
That mixer looks like my mom's old Sunbeam. It finally died about 10 years ago.
That mixer is amazing.
I love that sunbeam mixer, and we just found one from 1947 at a garage sale for $4! I can't wait to use it!
Also, poppy-red is my FAVORITE.
My mum had that Sunbeam mixer. She kept it in a big corner cupboard in our kitchen and once when I was about 10 it mysteriously turned itself on and scared the crap out of me sitting at the kitchen table. I spent the next several years convinced there was poltergeist in our house ;(
That is a Sunbeam MixMaster. The bowls were either a white milk glass or were clear glass and came in two sizes. I have one from 1965 that I found at Goodwill with the original milk glass bowls. A few days later I found a set of clear glass bowls and snapped them up! Also, there are a ton of accessories available for this mixer. You can tell the model year of the mixer by tilting the arm back and looking for the code on the under side of the arm.
I collect the Hall's Autumn Leaf pattern as my grandmother gave me her pieces a few years back. They are quite wonderful.
This is one of the most beautiful reds.
