Name: Blakeley (8 months)
Location: Costa Mesa, CA
When first trying to figure out where to start with Blakeley's nursery, I knew I wanted it to be that room that you couldn't help but steal a glance at when walking down the hallway.
I was very inspired when I came across Little P's nursery on Apartment Therapy a couple years ago. I just loved the calmness brought on by the wall color and the cheeriness of the bright yellow. And I also knew that even though we had found out we were having a girl, that I just wasn't quite ready for pink. I had found that amazing fabric used for the crib bumper, window valance and glider pillow at Joann's Fabrics and when I found out we were having a girl, I thought it would work perfectly with this color scheme!
This nursery was previously our office and contained that white corner desk and a leather couch. We knew we could do without the couch but also knew the desk was a necessity and needed to stay in the house, and since there was no where else for it, we opted for making the room 25% office space and 75% nursery. We added a few accessories on top of the hutch and pretty paper in the drawer labels to somewhat incorporate the look and feel like it actually works pretty well!
As far as turning the rest of the room into a nursery, we were working with a seriously tight budget and knew most items were either going to be used or DIY. The green dresser/changing table was B's great-great grandmother's and painted that gorgeous green color somewhere down the line. I found the glider on Craigslist for $10, and it actually came with a pretty gross cover that we ended up tossing, deciding to just use the white frame. Between the green cushion I bought at Pier 1, the yellow blanket made by my Aunt, and the pillow case made by myself and mother-in-law with that Joann's fabric, I thought it really worked well with the room. Not to mention it is incredibly comfortable :-)
I had originally wanted a sleigh crib but was having a hard time finding a used one in our price range. We have incredible garage sales in our neighborhood almost every weekend and ended up scoring that Jenny Lind crib for $15! It was white when we bought it but I really wanted it to pop against the robin egg wall color and opted to change it to that bright cheery yellow color. It was quite a process to get that thing painted, but with the help of a few willing friends, we got it done (12 spray cans and 3 clear top coats later!).
Finally, the closet for that room is actually a shared closet next to my room and since it was already too full, we knew we needed to find an armoire to hang all those adorable little clothes. I had seen this one at Ikea and fell in love with it, and it holds SO much stuff! I spruced it up with some Anthro knobs, hung my nursing cover on it, and wha-la!
As far as the smaller items go, the galvanized buckets on the floor holding the stuffed animals and books, as well as the ones on the shelf holding cloth diapers located above the changing pad were made by a friend who hand picked those fun prints. The beautiful art quote above the glider was found on etsy and the sweet animal prints above the desk were found online. The white tree behind the crib, which I would say is definitely the focal point of the room, was painted by a friend and the birds and leaves were cut out with pretty paper.
This is by far my favorite room in our house and I just love that we get to enjoy it everyday!
Thanks, Barbara! Well done!

White Enamel Flatwa...
This is great! And girls don't have to wear pink. Or like pink. Thanks for not giving in.
I love that brown carpet - great for a toddler's room. As for the pink, we were of the same philosophy and now the little one is asking for pink everything.
I LOVE this room!
Cute room, and +1 for not making it pink. I like pink, but where is it written that is the ONLY color a little girl can have in her life? Given how ubiquitous pink is for girls' clothing, toys, rooms, etc I think it has become an indoctrination thing like "if you are not this type of person you are not a real girl." I wish we could somehow take back pink as a *color* and lose it as an emblem.
I took "wha-la" as a deliberate misspelling; a cutesy joke. Some of my friends spell (and pronounce) it "viola" also as a joke. We know what the real French word is!
cute color scheme.
this and another recent nursery have shelves over the changing pad. I guess your babies aren't to the stage where they try to stand up everytime you change them? wouldn't work for my 16-month-old.
Offbeat, what a helpful and clever comment! Perhaps you could have also suggested a better name so that Barbara could go out and change it immediately.
Wow. I love everything about this room. The colors are just beautiful. You are an incredibly talented mama, Barbara!
Could you tell me the name of the spray paint you used for the crib? Also, where did you find that changing pad cover?
Oh and I LOVE your daughter's name! It's cute and unique.
What an adorable room for a little girl! Baby girl #3 is on her way in a few weeks and we are definitely pinked out in this house! I'm not using much pink in her space either! ;)
JANP - This isn't my girls room, but the changing pad looks like this one from Land of Nod.

I love this room! Also, you barely notice the carpet because everything is so cute. Wish I could do that with my apartment, too..the carpet always seems to ruin everything I have, hah.
Amazing. I'm stealing some of the ideas of this room for my little one on the way. Love the colors and all the obvious work that was put into everything. I can't decide what is my favorite - the crib, dresser or tree on the wall with the paper birds and leaves!
Also, I teach French and voila (meaning, behold or look) started being used as "wha-la" and other similar spellings years ago. It's all the same, so I would check your facts before you start making off-topic comments, Mtnwmyn and PI ;-)
Well done Barbara! Also, Blakeley is one of the cutest names I've ever heard. What is the meaning behind it?
Barbara here, thanks for the kind comments!
JanP- the spray paint used was Krylon in Bright Idea. Such a great color! And yes, Girlmommy is right, the changing pad cover is from Land of Nod.
Thanks JaimeLim! It actually was her grandmother's maiden name. We love it too :-)
And Offbeat, well then thank goodness you don't have to live with it :-)
Great, thank you! What an inspiring room.
Can you come over to my house and design my nursery???? Such a pretty place for baby to play and sleep. And I love that name Blakeley, I heard it somewhere on tv once and couldn't get it out of my head!
love this baby room. i actually think its gender neutral! we left our walls neutral tan boring yawn but I am glad I did! My little girl is princess, girly girl, shoes, purses, jewelry, make up ....she is only two!
Viola - wait till someone from Louisiana pronounces it "Wall All " - lost in translation or accent!
LOVE! Such a sweet little room. Love all the color, love the crib, the fabrics, the dresser, and I could keep going. I definitely wouldn't mind if this was my room. Well done! And what a cute name!
Everything is pretty but I really wish AP would stop featuring rooms that house obvious safety pitfalls like crib bumpers.
This just may be my favorite room I've seen yet. Cheers!
What a lovely nursery! You have created the perfect duel space! The color scheme is so charming and all the little extras you have added make the room so very personal You are very talented and your article was so very well written. I adore the name Blakeley and the sentiment behind it!
@JaimeLim - People can write 'wha-la' all they want but that will never make it a word, in either French or English. It's just wrong, so I have no idea why you're telling other people to 'check their facts'.
Back on topic: gorgeous room. Love the colour palette and multi-coloured knobs. Also, that mural is the best I've seen! :)

Love the yellow and teal/turquoise nd the prints!
Wow. Just wow. This room is simply gorgeous. Barbara, can you share where you found that valance? I've been looking for one just like it.
Simply perfect. That is one lucky baby.
Adorable nursery! One of my favorites on AT! I can't tell in the picture, is there something painted on the trunk of the tree behind the crib? I am way too inspired by that tree :-)
Barb here again.
Katiebelle75, we actually made the valance but the fabric is from Joanns. I was there last week and they still had it :-)
Kallielove, there is! It's a heart with J + B inside (my and my husband's initials). Good eye!
This is the most beautiful nursery I have ever seen. You have inspired me for my first baby's nursery. You have exquisite taste. Thank you for sharing!
Everything is so pretty! I would have to disagree with those who think this room would work for a boy though, this is definitely a girl's room. Thanks for opening up your home, Barbara.
This one stopped me in my tracks. Simply lovely. Gorgeous colors. Love that shelf with the ultrasound picture and pinwheels.
As usual, I play the role of the logical one - what are your plans when the kid gets too big for the crib? The room is supposed to be for your baby. Take out the desk.
As usual, you play the role of the judgmental snarky one, GREENWOODGAL.
They said there was no where else to put it, so they worked with what they have.
i LOVE this nursery - can you tell me the name and brand of the wall color paint?? thx!
