Frances England's kids are growing up, and so is the music she's writing. Her fourth CD, Blink of an Eye, reflects an expanding musical palette influenced by her sons' changing listening habits. The result is pretty, poppy, and fun for the whole family.
The album opens with the title track, a lovely song filled with images of stars and birds, percussion, and a chorus provided by musical guests Elizabeth Mitchell, Caspar Babypants, and Dean Jones. Other standouts include "Little Wings," a tribute to fast-moving kids, "Bicycle Built for Two," a synthy song about outdoor adventures in tandem, and "Saltwater Spin," a beautiful meditation on the sea.
Frances England's sound is folky and twee, but all her own. My family first heard Blink of an Eye during a kitchen table art session on an overcast day. It served as the perfect soundtrack to a low-key morning at home with the kids. When it was over they asked to hear it again and were singing along on the second listen.
