What exactly are plastic toys made of? It seems like a dumb question, because obviously, plastic toys are made of .... plastic. But what exactly is in that plastic? In this week's SFGate, a follow-up story to recent discussions regarding San Francisco's toxic toy ordinance, the first of its kind in the United States. Whether or not you agree with the original ordinance or the recently introduced legislation meant to limit its scope, the topic is definitely food for thought. Toy manufacturers and at least one retailer are suing the city over the ordinance, and what is so surprising about this issue is that it is underscoring a basic problem regarding plastic toys - nobody seems to know for sure which toys contain banned substances such as bisphenol A or phthalates. This is definitely an issue to keep an eye on, and we are curious to see if other cities follow suit. -kristin
