In today's Chronicle, Urban Design Writer John King notes that the American Planning Association named San Francisco's North Beach one of "10 Great Neighborhoods in America." In North Beach declared one of 10 best U.S. neighborhoods, King describes the neighborhood as once an Italian enclave leavened by a sprinkling of bohemians, now a dense agglomeration of sidewalk cafes and a population that spans the ethnic and social spectrum. Other neighborhoods on the list include Seattle's Pike Place Market, Brooklyn's Park Slope, and San Diego's Hillcrest district. Image: Frederic Larson/Chronicle
