Blogging Time Out NY Kids: The Apartment Issue

Who did Time Out NY Kids go to when they were looking for space solutions for families? Well, our very own Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of Apartment Therapy, of course! Maxwell is in the spotlight in the July issue on newsstands now. As many of you know, he and his wife live with daughter Ursula, eight months old, in a one bedroom, 265-square-foot apartment in the West Village. He's got some great advice and stylish solutions for every budget! Is your baby's nursery in a walk-in closet? (We know we had at least one entry in our Smallest Coolest Contest that was a closet/nursery) Maxwell's got some ideas. Is your office also a playroom? Don't worry- that can work! Click through for more questions and solutions from Maxwell.

If you're dealing with the walk-in closet scenario, Maxwell suggests fresh paint and inexpensive carpeting. These Flor Jigs Up tiles are his recommendation.

If you can spend a bit more money, make sure you have proper lighting and consider this Tord Boontje Garland Shade Light. If you can really splurge, create a custom wall unit with a built-in-crib and drawers. Maxwell suggests Anthony Dalo Woodworking; 718.428.9001.

Maybe you have nowhere to store all of those blocks and stuffed animals, Tubtrugs bins are one of Maxwell's favorites. We love the fun colors and the price of these! They're available here. For a moderate price, check out P'kolino's storage ottomans (above) available here. If you're ready to go all out, create storage along the walls. You can build your own modular system over at Atlas East Shelving.
