You know the traditional practice of painting porch ceilings blue? It's a touch we've always admired, but what about those of us living in an apartments without a porch to be painted? Here are some interior ceilings that have taken the blue color idea and run with it:
Some of these vary from the soft blue tone you'll traditionally find on porch ceilings. But all of them conjure up the feeling of the sky overhead - whether during day or night:

Any idea of the source for the helicopter print in photo 4? I looked through the House and Home link but can't find the original posting of this image to investigate.
thanks!
It looks like it really goes best with an all-white room or a room with mostly white and some pale yellow touches.
I love this idea. I just finished painting our baby's room and used a nice robin's egg blue on the ceiling:) (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=507679023#!/photo.php?pid=4092070&id=507679023)
i just love it !!!!its amazing here that its all summer for a beach apartment with the blue and the light colors it gives a sence of peacefull and nice place to read and enjoy ..i congratulate you its beautifull
I love this! I always paint my walls blue, but I've never thought to just do the ceiling. I might do this in the future.
I adore blue ceilings and have painted many. One of my favorite tints for ceilings is Topsail blue by Sherwin Williams. It's on the gray/blue side and very subtle so it goes with just about everything.
Love it! I have a blue porch ceiling, and I would like to paint my bedroom ceiling blue as well, but I hesitate because the porch ceiling looks weird with artificial lighting. Even white twinkle lights look strange. Kind of a weird seasick greenish glow. Not what I'm going for in my bedroom at all ;)
@larchgirl I'm also interested in where the helicopter print can be found. If you find out, please let me know! Thanks!
I recognize a few of these I love blue on the ceiling.
Here is another that is a bit deeper and I just love the reflection of the pendant light-

hello! does anyone know where i can get a coral sea fan like the one pictured above at?
ChristineInTheCity - the photographer is Jeffery Milstein.
(and that took me HOURS to figure out! GAH! I hate poorly annotated sources, it.drives.me.nuts!)
I love this!
Does anyone have any thoughts on how this would look with a drop ceiling? We rent our house, but since the landlord is my mother in law we can pretty much do whatever we want, but removing the drop ceiling and all that would go with that is not in the budget.
Right now our house looks like an office building, with the ugly white tiles and black support bars holding it up. Blech.
Lovely. Thanks for the inspiration.
Larchgirl, thank you!
I've being scratching my head for a way to introduce some Mediterranean blue without overwhelming the space. This is the perfect idea.

number 4!
The 2nd, 3rd and last pictures are my favorites. They're just so soft, sophisticated, comfortable and calming...
Check out another deeper blue ceiling featured on AT New York earlier this year: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/house-tours/isabella-and-take-on-inwood-house-tour-106498
#7 looks a bit like my living room. I know i want two tone walls but I can't decide if I want to come halfway up w/ the color from the bottom, or come down from the ceiling w/ the color like #7! AT i need a tutorial on how to do this photoshop!
Thank you so much for posting all of these amazing photos! I too LOVE to use blue on the ceiling when I am working with my clients. It feels so natural and soothing, and contrary to what many believe the effect will be, it actually lifts the ceiling and makes it feel much higher!
In fact, my own living room and dining room ceilings are done in Benjamin Moore's Colorado Gray 2136-50. [Oh, and I should mention, ignore what paint companies call colors! MANY colors "named" as gray by paint companies are about as blue as you would like for your walls or ceiling. Much more than that, and to me it feels like the "blue's" are screaming at me!] I think I'll post a photo of it on our Facebook page so that you can see it. You'll see that it looks and feels much different from all of these shots because the walls and trim are much richer and darker than all of the shots here...look for us on FB: Color in Space Inc.
Thanks again for a great post!
Oh, and BambiJo, yes, this will work great on your ceiling tiles to camouflage them! Paint those babies all the time and does a major transformation...spraying works best.
And SydneyBristow, your trim should determine where you can begin and stop your colors. Notice how the blue follows the cove ceiling in #7 and the picture rail resumes the wall color. When ceilings are darker than walls, it actually makes a space feel bigger...provides LIFT to the space...
