Some people believe you shouldn't paint your dining room blue because it makes food less appetizing. No wonder blue dining rooms are the exception rather than the rule: Beiges, reds and whites are far more popular choices for our eating areas. But blue can be a gorgeous choice for the dining room. I say forget the color theories! And, anyway, with obesity rates like ours, maybe a little appetite suppression isn't such a bad thing!
FIRST ROW
1. Benjamin Moore "Surf Blue" is fun, bright and bold in this contemporary, sleek dining room from Mint Peach; House & Home. Soft, warm blue walls give this traditional dining room an elegant, romantic look. The curtains, chairs and lighting all work to soften the potentially gloomy hue of the dusty gray paint color.
2. Erin's Cool Blue Dining Room. Here, a seafoam green-blue lends a calming, beachy atmosphere in the dining room.
3. This deep blue from Interiors By Lucyina Moodies certainly brings the drama!
4. Kelly’s Andersonville Apartment. The paint is Benjamin Moore: Majestic Blue on top and Tranquil Blue on the bottom (they're next to each other on the color card).
5. Urban Grace Interiors. I love this room with its smoky grey-blue walls and Swedish furniture. Subtle and sublime.
SECOND ROW
6. Amy’s Vintage Modern Nest This kind of blue takes guts but Amy pulls it off in her mid-century modern, light-filled dining room. For a similar color, try Blue Diamond 736, a pale blue with a hint of green from the Classic Color collection.
7. DecorPad. Another dusty blue shade that borders on gray. Perfect in this traditional dining room.
8. East #30 James' Shoreline Blue. Another bold, bright choice of blue. It works well because the room has a vintage, whimsical feel to it.
9. Ashley and Kevin’s “Kind of Blue” Dining Room. Here, one bright blue wall gives the room a real lift. Try imagining the room with all-neutral walls. Quite dull, right.
10. Decorpad. The dark blue-gray walls are just perfect in this (very) eclectic dining room. I love the orange accents combined with the velour brown retro chairs. And because the ceiling and tops of the walls are cream, the room doesn't sink into gloominess.
THIRD ROW
11. House & Home. This room may be too much for most people!
12. Martine Louise Design. The walls aren't blue in this dining room but everything else is, from the chair upholstery to the lampshades to the luscious curtains.
13. The Lennoxx. A single stripe of electric blue brings this room to life.
14. A subtle blue viaDecorpad.
15. Beach Bungalow 8 via Decorpad. Turquoise blue walls and Kelly Wearstler Imperial Trellis wallpaper.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Spec,
also put a blue light bulb in your fridge. It will make the food all look spoiled.
Just painted mine! Haven't lost any weight yet...

"Appetite suppression," LOL! I'd never heard that recommendation but I kind of get it! I think these rooms are beautiful too, but somehow they DON'T seem conducive to relishing food! Does anyone have, or know of, theories as to why this might be the case? is is just reflected light making things look unfresh?
I'm such a fan of blue. I never knew there was that rule. I love all the dining rooms pictured!
A friend of mine painted her dining room a blue that matched her eyes and made her look really good. That way, when having a romantic dinner with her boyfriend, she would always look her best (and yes, this last point was considered when picking colors).
I wouldn't call some of these blue but they are all very pretty.
I think that is a crazy theory about food/wall color anyway. Maybe some plate colors would clash with certain food, or certain lighting could cast an unpleasant glow but I think most of us could find good food in the dark if we had to!
I've had an indigo dining room for a couple of months now and love it! It is so pretty and crisp next to white trim and lots of windows.
This is like saying redheads don't look good in red. Redheads are *hot* in red! Just depends on the person and the shade of red.
I never heard that you shouldn't paint a dining room blue. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't think ANY color on the wall could keep me from wanting to eat!
Love, love, love my blue dining room. It's similar to #2
My favorite dining room of all time is actually navy blue...and I wouldn't think twice about painting a dining room blue because color theory also suggests that blue can bring about feelings of intelligence...figure that can't hurt the dinner conversation, right?
Good timing! My roommate and I are about to paint two walls in our living room and one in our dining nook area (wouldn't really call it a dining room in our apt) a pretty gray-blue.
Our dining room is kind of a spruce blue. Haven't noticed anyone not eating because of it!
I just did my dining room blue and hadn't heard you weren't supposed to do it, but I LOVE the dark blue in candlelight!

I think that blue "rule" just applies to dinnerware.
That said, I have Meissen's Blue Onion china, and find that it makes food look beautiful! I also LOVE this blue earthenware, and have been trying to find it ever since I saw it:

So, personally I think the hype about blue and the appetite is a bunch of hooey!!
I didn't know that there was a rule against blue in dining rooms, but I'm glad I broke it! I love my dark blue dining room! It's a little bit less gray than #3 and it has white wainscotting. 1.) It is absolutely flattering to ALL complexions, so your guests will feel confortable at your table. 2.) Rather than make food unappetizing, I think it highlights it: Blue is complementary to orange, and it makes the Thanksgiving Turkey stand out against the white dinnerware like "WOW!".
I never thought about what color might make food more/less appealing when I painted my dining room. I just choose colors I liked for the house.
If someone told you they could help you lose weight by painting your dining room or kitchen a different color, would you believe them?
I sure hope not! I have the same problem with any claims that blue has any sort of impact on appetite. Especially since I grew up with a blue dining room and never noticed anything like this.
Those are some beautiful dining rooms!
I've heard that before. But too bad because I dream of a kithen with blue glass tiles for the back splash. They're beautiful!
Agreed! I too have a blue dining room and I LOVE it!

Changing my dining room from the awful red it was to a deep vibrant blue was the best decision I ever made. I gaze into that room and make a happy sigh at least once a day. <3
Also, my kitchen is a lighter complementary shade of blue and it is gorgeous. I need to take pics...
Coming from the advertising side of color theory, notice how much of the candy bars at the check-out line have browns and red/oranges on the wrappers? Studies have shown that those colors trigger the "oh yum" button in most of us when we glance at the product quickly, making us more likely to pick it up on a whim. Color plays a strong part in the selling an idea. Now whether that same idea translates over into interior wall color, I'm not too sure... I don't think a red, beige, or orange wall is going to make me more or less hungry.
I'd personally much rather have a sense of calm while in my dining room, and am much more drawn to the cool tones like blues, greens, and grays. I've never been a really big fan of the color red anyways, its always felt too abrasive to me. But it works for candy bars ;)
Uh...yeah - rules.... whatever! I painted my dining room a deep gray with blue undertones. Kind of dramatic - but I LOVE it, and has everyone (thusfar) who has seen it.
Funny you should post something like this. I've just been looking as house listings online in Seattle, and I swear if I see one more red dining room I'm not going to buy one.
mschatelaine,
the dish you linked to looks quite a bit like the dishes of Yoshitaka Araki (I love that pottery as well, and bought some many years ago in Japan). The color is called Turkish Blue, and he used to make a less shiny version, but now it all seems to have a shiny glaze. Such a beautiful color though! This shop in Japan sells his pottery. http://www.utsuwayayuuyuu.com/SHOP/YA-0037.html
Anyone else notice that three of these rooms feature the same pendant light, with a 4th very similar one?
Breakfast nook is sky blue, no wonder nobody likes what I cook. ;)
some people believe that wearing tin foil hats will keep the voices away. doesn't make 'em right.
I agree with the statement "...maybe a little appetite suppression isn't such a bad thing!"
But people, remember to always get a balanced diet.
