Board books are likely the first books your child will be exposed to so pick good ones! We love refreshing our collection at the library, but having a small home collection is important too. Here are five board books you may not find in your big box book store (Fox Books) that we wanted to shine a little light on.
ABC by Matthew Porter
Flowers by Matthew Porter (see his other great board books here)
Popping Through Pictures by Amanda Visell
Awake to Nap by Nikki McClure
Bedtime for Tad by Adam Nicely
Do you have any great, lesser known board books to recommend?

Good stuff! I like the lesser-known books. (I can't, for the life of me, figure out why everyone gushes so much about "Goodnight Moon.")
We really like the "When I'm Feeling..." series by Tracey Moroney, which we recently stumbled across on the bargain racks at Barnes & Nobles.
These look really sweet. I'd like to know what parents who've bought Awake to Nap think of it. We bought it for our soon-to-be-born baby, but it only goes to "N" and I was wondering about that. Does it matter?
Oh, and Rob - I get you. I always thought Goodnight Moon was a dumb book, but then I read it to a class of hyperactive 2 year olds and by the end they all gave a collective, contented sigh and went to nap, and I completely changed my opinion. I think the beauty of it is simply its peaceful rhythm and sense of closure. It's become one of my favorite early children's books.
The first board book my son responded to was Paola Opal's Saffy. I loved it too.
The first book we bought him was Charley Harper's ABC. I'm not sure if that still qualifies as a lesser known book.
We also have Flowers and at one point, I bought Amanda Vissell's book but returned it because my son didn't seem to like it.
I'm a big fan of Nikki McClure and we have the first 1000 days journal. Her papercuts are awesome.
I LOVE Matthew Porter's books! They are simple and beautiful. I especially love Monkey World.
tottini in Seattle does a great job finding great new books for kids! I always try and stop by when I'm in the neighborhood.
@emilykristin we have Awake to Nap and I don't think it matters that it only goes to N. When my son was an infant he really liked looking at the pictures because Nikki's style of a dark papercut against a light background is easy for young eyes to make out.
