When it rains in LA, as it did this past weekend, we prefer to stay in. With our apartment now the inviting space we always dreamed it could be (thanks to the Apartment Therapy Cure), we're happy to do so.
Our friends love to come to visit us. We're caught up on our Oscar movies and television is on repeats, so we've moved on to games. Lately, we're obsessed with Mexican Train dominos , but we like to mix it up. Scrabble, Monopoly, Yahtzee and Risk have all made their way onto the coffee table. We love these library editions of our favorites that we found at Target.

I also love these Target games. Someone gave me Clue and Stratego for Christmas. I've played with friends after dinner a few times. They are as fun as I remembered.
I prefer the scrabble board I found at the thrift. It is the kind with the plastic grid and oxblood tiles. sadly, most boardgames are cheaply made, despite coming in pretty packages.
scrabble! We have a $15 no-frills version that works just fine :)
When I was on Martha Stewart for that eBay show in December of 2005, Jamie Lee Curtis (no relation) was the guest and she was giving all of us audience members the deluxe Scrabble set with the turntable thing and the snap-in letters, and I gave mine to my sister's family for Christmas.
But I loved playing it with my nieces and nephew, so I bought one for myself and my partner, which we LOVE playing. We also have a travel version, which we love less, because the pieces want to snap out onto the floor of the Amtrak train, which is maddening.
my boyfriend and i have game night all the time! while i love the classics, we've been playing a lot of Catch Phrase, Cranium, Apples to Apples, and Scene It! (on the xbox 360). its also really fun to bring out a deck of cards...
does this mean that i'm getting old when i'd rather stay in and host game night instead of going out to the bars? ;)
goodnightdean: I just recently got turned onto Apples to Apples, and I have to say that is one fun game, especially if your friends are total hams who are just dying to sway you to pick their cards. I must be getting old too...but who cares!
Scrabble. I have a travel version that I've had for probably 15 years that is still fine.
Scrabble is great, but our new fav is Carcassonne.
I think there's a good distinction to be made between party games like Taboo and friends-come-over games... smarter ones. Our current favorites are Carcassonne (as jolippitydrum mentioned) and Settlers of Catan. Each play is different from the last and they don't require abstract trivia knowledge or a significant amount of time to set up or learn. Carcassonne (and one or two of its expansions) was one of the best investments we've ever made in this regard, and as it's cheap ($30) and two people can play and have as much fun as five, you'll soon think of it as a good investment as well.

but i love clue, i have the simpson's version and i love it so much.
My family is divided into the good at spelling and the terrible at spelling so Scrabble is out. I do the jumble during breakfast. When we all convene in a big extended family, we play poker. Monopoly and Mexican train have had their days.
we play taboo, whoonu (my new favorite), true colors, and apples to apples. i tried carcassonne and stank at it.
Scrabble's my favorite. I have (decluttering anyone?) 3 games. 2 "deluxe" editions (one is called onyx or something like that and is black and silver--the other is traditional) which are in ENORMOUS boxes and one travel (ditto, Curtis, on those danged pieces!). I'm debating what to do about the 2 deluxe editions, b/c I like different aspects of the 2. So, instead of deciding, I've kept both.
I like Monopoly, but I always lose when playing with my friends. The funny part about that is that of my friends, I'm the only one that works in real estate!
