If you're looking for something genuinely out-of-the-ordinary for a holiday gift this year, check out Karl Zahn. The Brooklyn-based designer has a website (OBoiler.com) where he features his protoypes and sells a few that are in production.
One of the major threads running through his work is a fascination with power outlets and plugs (and the psychology behind them). He takes the scary childhood warning never to lodge coins in an electrical outlet and turns it on its ear, creating a wall-mounted outlet-shaped bank that eats nickels and quarters. His Wall Cleats are outlet covers that have grown arms to wrangle cords, and his Covering Plates are decorative tiles made to look like they're masking dozens of electrical elements.
For more information on Karl Zahn and his body of work, check out OBoiler.com. Products currently available through his webshop include the Phrena Lamp ($28), Lace Tape ($10), and the Simple Series (various prices).

*gasp* I want that outlet plate. Such a crazy thing to desire but it makes so much sense.
