In my home, we have a gray sofa. It's nice and it's easy to match, but every so often I think about the long pink hand-me-down sofa I parted with a few years ago...then I play around with the idea of reupholstering my current sofa in some shocking color—hot pink, kelly green, turquoise. There's nothing like a bold, bright sofa to kick the blah out of a living room.
If you're considering a reupholstery project or shopping for a new sofa, here are a few real-life examples of beautiful and colorful couches from past tours. For product info, click through to the resource guide included in each house tour.

the turquoise couch is to die for!
No way. I have a bright orange sofa & that exact picture above it. Great minds think alike.
I have a lovely ice blue sofa. When I was looking for sofas, I told myself "NO BORING COLORS!"
No. 2 on top row. Love it.
I didn't give myself the option of 'neutral' when I bought my sofa. Go big or go home!
I have one of those exact sofas... my husband decided on the colour. We all love it.
I have (neutral, safe, slightly boring) moss green. I like it but that turquoise one is gorgeous. (I don't think my other half would go for something that colorful, though, and in relationships, compromise has to rule.)
I much prefer neutral paint and bright furniture. So many people do it the other way around. I suppose maybe because paint is less expensive to change when you get tired of it.
We have a bright and bold red Crate and Barrel sectional in our main living room that I love! It is beautiful, modern and fits our whole family of five comfortably. You may view the room as well as the rest of my home tour here:

They are all rather nice, but I don't know, I feel that white sofas are just the way to go.
I have a large red sofa in my tiny parlour. The walls and most of the rest of the furniture in the room are white, I love it.
