Want to really up your decor game with some design tricks that the professionals know and use regularly? You don't have to spend a lot of money and these ideas are pretty easy to execute. Before the year is up, incorporate one of these ideas into one of your rooms!

Colorful (custom-looking) shelves and storage

Take any shelves in your home — affordable ones you bought at a store and assembled yourself, an old vintage bookcase you've lugged from room to room, your open kitchen cabinet shelving, some built-ins that came with your house — and give them an instant upgrade with paint and color. The more open you are with playing around with pattern and color and their configurations, the more bold you can make this design move. The image above, as seen in Inside Out, involved some different color shelves punctuating an already colorful living room. You could just paint shelves, just paint shelf backs, paint a whole case, just the edges or some other idea you come up with on your own. Whatever you choose, it will make a bold impact in a room.

A bathroom beyond builder grade

Replacing the mirror that came in your bathroom with a new (or vintage!) one that matches your tastes better is an instant way to upgrade a bathroom of any size or style — and is something that can be done on the cheap, in an afternoon and even if you're waiting until you have a bigger budget for a larger renovation. The above room on My Domaine has undoubtedly seen a renovation, but it also shows off two bold mirrors that can be an inspiration even if you can do anything else to the rest of your bathroom right now.

A dining room seating instant upgrade

Sure you could go out and buy new chairs, or paint that bench. But you could also create not just a brand new look with this designer trick, you could add more volume and oomph: Add throws to your chair backs, chair seats or bench tops. As seen in this room spotted on Refinery 29, adding sheepskins to the backs of the chairs in this room adds softness and layering to the whole room.

The ultimate can't-get-it-wrong coffee table combo

Adding a bold punch of color with a patterned tray, a set of your favorite books and yes, even adding a bouquet of flowers can go onto any type of coffee table and instantly make a whole living room look chic. Photo spotted on Domino.

Oversized art

Art on the walls can be a bummer when you don't know what to put on there or don't have the money for just what you want or feel like you'll never afford something big enough to be dramatic. But engineering prints can solve all your money and decor problems (and make quite the visual impact). Room photo via Smitten Studio.
