Bold Steps: Colorful & Patterned Staircases

When my husband and I impulsively tore out much of our home's carpeting two weeks ago, the stairs were a big concern. Both sets are plywood, and we're still deciding how we'll upgrade them.

For now, I'm daydreaming of real wood treads and risers with actual character. Paint, tile, wallpaper, and stencils — even something as unexpected as rulers (Image 10) — can add interesting color and pattern. If you're really creative, your stairs can even offer a lesson in French conjugation (Image 9).
