The next best thing to hibernating through the winter is cozying up with some beloved books. And if your Christmas list is anything like mine, you'll need somewhere to keep your collection! Check out this inspiration gallery for some interesting arrangements and ways to incorporate a library into the rooms of your home.
Five ideas for book storage:
- Using a shelf system, turn a narrow nook into a cozy reading room
- Utilize vertical space with a bookshelf mounted over a low window
- An open bookshelf can make a nice room divider
- Incorporate book storage into your favorite storage hutch
- Use a simple bracket system to turn a wall into a focal point of books

# 9 is good, but there is a lot of wasted space. Most standard "bookshelves" -- they are really knick-nack shelves -- are too high and way too deep for books, which are seldom deeper than 8 inches or higher than 10.
monarda: Book dimensions depend hugely on the type of book. Picture books, cookbooks, and art books are all frequently much taller and deeper than your average novel or biography.
I'm so jealous of all these spaces. I've lived in my apartment for 3 months and I have yet to get a bookcase to store my collection of books.
Re: #2 and #9...those high shelves seem like a waste of good books to me. Maybe I saw this because I'm absurdly short, but it doesn't seem like it'd be fun or convenient to be getting those books down.
These are absolutely gorgeous - I especially love number 9! But I have to add that I am extremely happy with my Ikea Lack bookcase.
I finally sat down & really focused on our extra sitting room - which is now our library! We painted it black, as the room gets a lot of light, and we LOVE it!!! So cozy and warm!!

My favorite is definitely #8. Stunning way to make books stand out rather than blend into nooks.
I love #10 - what is that shelving system?
lovely ideas! reading in a comfy chair in natural lights
I love Apartment Therapy and all related websites, but for 2011 I hope they resolve to get rid of the gallery format (especially when it has the list below it, so you have to scroll around like a mad person on top of painstakingly clicking your way through the pictures) *luxury problem and well aware of it, but still an annoyance*
I think I have seen every one of these pictures before on this site.
Le gasp! Does anyone know where the awesome pillows in Photo #2 came from?
DO WANT.
CozyLittle- Love your library! That black is awesome. Totally stealing that some day when I own my own place.
We used the Container Store's Elfa shelf system! We really pared down our book collection, putting some in storage and donating others, and we're minimalists at heart so a reading nook HAD to be uncluttered. Elfa really helped us keep it clean!
I can't wait to get out of my uber-small space (150sqft), into a real apartment, and get a proper case for all my books. Beautiful ideas - I LOVE #9 and #2
I really love the shelves from number 10. Anyone know where they are from?
I'm with MaggieXS - #8 makes me swoon! Looks like it's built to have a low profile, too.
Amanda, can we have some source links to the photos please? When a see a photo I enjoy, I like to be able to see more of the apartment or sources of objects found in the photo.
I only get bookcases with adjustable shelves so that I can customize them to my collection. Bookcases without adjustable shelves would waste space and not look as good here. I don't mix books and knick knacks because they're easier to keep nice separately. Bookcases in my foyer also serve as launching pads-landing strips.
Does anyone remember which house tour #7 was?
@mlme: it was Kara and Ken from L.A. the floors had me drooling.

I updated the link list to include all of the house tours I could find here on AT. There are a couple missing and I will fill those in as soon as I can find them!
