One of the great things about living in the Southwest is the sunny climate which makes our unique indoor-outdoor living possible. Where else do dinner parties end in the hot tub? Architect Cliff May celebrated the California Style in his work. He, in turn, is celebrated in a new book by Daniel P. Gregory, Senior Home Editor at Sunset Magazine...

Cliff May's singular vision was refined over his working life. Starting in the 30's, May perfected a ranch house where the idea was to "walk out of the living room onto the ground." If you couldn't do that, he felt, you weren't "living like a real Californian." Even our dependence on the car was incorporated into design of his houses. But despite the strict parameters he set for himself, his houses were never cookie-cutter boring. They caught the imagination of the country and the world. In fact, by the end of his career, in the 80's, Cliff May houses could not only be found all over the Southwest, they'd also cropped up in Connecticut, Ireland and Switzerland (where the weather discourages indoor-outdoor living for three-quarters of the year).
