We're not sure where this came from but it ended up in our inbox--pages from a 1970's JC Penny Catalogue. Mint green carpet for the toilet, wine barrel dining room set, it's all so kitsch it's hard to believe that there was a time when this appealed to the masses.
Bookmarked, is an opportunity for ATLA and our readers to revisit some of the triumphs, follies and ideas from decor publications and books from the past. If you've got a great decor photo/image or design idea from an out-of-print source, please send it to la(at)apartmenttherapy(dot)com, including the title and publication information.
So what say you, is it kitsch enough to be cool again? Is there any merit to this design or should it stay squarely in the seventies, to be filed under: Never Again.

Are you kidding? The wine barrel table is perfect for a kids room...hook me up!
Hahaha, holy shit. I admit, the mint green carpet is much worse than the wine barrel chairs, but they're both pretty bad.
Wow, my friends had those wine barrel chairs in college! I'd recognize that diamond pattern anywhere. They were actually some pretty cool chairs, at least on the front porch, not in the dining room (that was where we put the table for beer pong).
I got the same email... It was quite funny.
And my grandmother's bathroom looked just like the picture, except hers was pink...LOL
Ah yes, the carpet on the toilet days.
I saw the email. My parents had that exact wood barrel table & chairs set in our downstairs family room for years. It was bomb-proof and kitschy and my siblings and I were sad when we were back home for a family event and it had left the house...about 5 years ago!
Yes, the wine barrel chairs were all the rage with the hip young families back in the day. I saw many a set in basement rec rooms at sleepovers.. I wonder what became of them all...
Nothing like the smell of urine soaked shag in the morning
Ah, such memories....When I was a wee tot, I would stand there and urinate directly ON to the carpeted toilet lid, because it soaked right in, and I assumed that it was going right through into the toilet.
My parents caught me and corrected me on my error in physics.
I've seen toilet-lid carpet but never tank carpet. Yoiks.
Never, never, never. Not in the 70's, not ever! Key words, JC Penny.
btoddster had the right idea. P*** on it.
Here's where it came from. The 15minutelunch blog. Excellent stuff, the rest of it too...
