Flying for the first time can bring a mix of excitement and trepidation for children. (Parents traveling with young children may feel the same way!). Reading about flight, planes and airports can help prepare your kids for what they are going to see and experience.
Your children's librarian can surely point you to some great books to take out (and many libraries loan books longer over the summer) and we've put this list together for you to explore. These are geared toward young children from toddlers to kindergarten.
Top Row
• The Little Airplane by Lois Lenski
• Airplane Flight!, Lift-the-Flap Series by Susanna Leonard Hill
• Going on a Plane by Anne Civardi
• My Plane Trip by Dover Coloring Books
• My First Airplane Ride by Patricia Hubbell
Bottom Row:
• Busy Airport (interactive) by Rebecca Finn
• The Noisy Airplane Ride by Mike Downs
• Lisa's Airplane Trip by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben
• Amazing Airplanes by Tony Mitton
• Planes by Byron Barton

Shaw's Original Fir...
Richard Scary's Airport Book is also a favorite.
The Usborne book Going on a Plane -top row - third one in - does have the security information in it. We bought right before Christmas when we were flying to see Grandparents in England. It was great! Our 3 year old understood that she would have to take her shoes and walk through a medal detector.
My niece is a seasoned traveller at the age of four. Three trips to across the Atlantic to Europe and a few within the lower 48 states. The Lisa book (bottom center) is about Lisa traveling alone. At first I thought that was a bit odd, but it would get an older kid used to the idea. Not very detailed for first-time travelers, but is a favorite pick from the library.
Sorry, I said Medal - It was supposed to be metal. We bought the sticker story book version from Amazon. Not sure if I bought it off of the US or the UK site. Just an fyi - the Sticker stories are wonderful...keeps child entertained, she loves them. They are hard to find here and expensive, but my in-laws send them from UK every other week or so.
Thanks for this list! We fly quite often and my 16 month old is just at the age where he's starting to understand it. I was planning to get the Byron Barton book (since we have Trains and he LOVES it!), but I'm glad to have some great options, thanks!
