Adding Chain to Closet Rod for Extra Closet Storage

FLTFUUBFPBKYS4S.MEDIUM.jpg

Many small space dwellers are short on closet space. We spotted this simple, clever solution for beefing up your hanging storage space on the Instructables blog. It's a variation on another chain and hanger system we've blogged about before. (You'll find an alternate method for thicker closet rods, after the jump...)

In the first photo, the chain is attached to an S hook which is then attached to the skinny rod. Most of us have thicker closet rods. In that case, like in the photo above, you can just hook the chain over a top hanger to do the job.

This idea seems particularly well suited to hanging off-season clothing in small spaces. For more photos and information, check out the post on Instructables!

Does anyone use this storage idea? Any tips?

This looks like a vertical pile of clothing. One of my clients tried this and was pretty disappointed with the result. It does help to cram more stuff into a small space, but none of it is really accessible.

We changed her small closet to a double hanging system, and she's much happier now.

Total ghetto. Just look at the pictures. This is a perfect approach to organize your stuff... in jail. LOL!

I've done this. It was really frustrating to use, especially if you wanted something from the middle of the chain. And don't hang anything heavy on anything but the first link, or you won't be able to lift the end of the chain to enable you to unhook anything!

I thought it was a great idea at first, but hated it after a week. Then I did like raven, and created a double-rod system. Couldn't be happier with it.

Efficient, but really ugly. I'd be embarrassed to open my closet.

If you find a decorative looking chain, this really won't look half bad. TBH, I think this would be a great way to store non-essential stuff (like summer clothes during winter). Also, I wouldn't care too much because I don't let guests go through my private closet, so if it saved room for stuff I do use, then it would be working perfectly.

Instead of being a packrat...why not just donate the clothes one doesn't use to a charity? You get a neater closet and gain good chi (^_^)

This only works if you have very slim hangers (not these plastic tubular things) and rather thin/small shirts (camisoles, for instance). And only layer a few rather than, say, ten. Otherwise it gets really bulky and unwieldy and hard to use.

Before you do this, make sure your closet rod can withstand the extra weight! Sometimes, the supports holding the rod in place are not very sturdy, and they can break apart with not much on them.

Trust me on this, the crappy plastic supports holding up one of my closet rods broke two months ago, and I really didn't have THAT much hanging on it in the first place.

The key is to only own what you have room for, not hoard what your closet can't hold.
