There are a fair number of high-end furniture consignment stores in the Boston area, but few offer the rare, deep inventory of traditional AND contemporary pieces that Garage Sale provides. On recent trips we discovered like-new pieces from West Elm, Crate and Barrell, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, and Design within Reach, among others. Garage Sale's typical M.O. is to price their items at 50% off the original retail price, giving you more affordable "design within reach"...

Located in the South End, Boston's fast growing unofficial design mecca, Garage Sale was started four years ago by co-owners Nancy Farrington and Leslie Kaplan. On a recent trip, we were warmly greeted by Nancy, who makes you feel like you're not in a high-end consignment shop, but instead in her well outfitted community living room. She has a genuine and palpable joy for the service she's providing at Garage Sale.

Garage Sale has a collaborative relationship with Boston's Aids Action Committee and their Boomerangs Resale Shop in Jamaica Plain (we'll post about that in the future!). If an item doesn't sell in 90 days then the consignor has the option of donating the piece to Boomerangs.

That said, Nancy and Leslie are very selective about what they accept into the shop, and approximately 90% of the items sell within 90 days, with most of the pieces moving in and out of the store within days or weeks, creating room for a constantly fresh and replenished inventory.

Another aspect that sets Garage Sale apart from other home consignment shops in the area is their inclusion of locally produced fine art. Nancy and Leslie provide a venue for a small group of local artists to sell their work, most of whom use Garage Sale as their exclusive outlet.

Next time you're in the market for a contemporary or traditional like-new sofa, dining room table, coffee table or decorative accessory, be sure to place Garage Sale at the top of your destination list.

I love the rug in that second photo. I'm sure everything here is way out of my price range though...

Hi Michpc,

Kyle here. I liked that rug too. It's a runner and was actually pretty affordable for a nice kilim rug. $85.00!

Thanks,
Kyle

I stop by Garage Sale regularly - it's never dull with such a rotation of goods! Plus, you can stop by Hudson, Lekker, and other neighborhood shops before or after your scavenging. To me, that's a perfect Saturday morning.

Garage sale is definately one of the best in Boston. I was at salvation army the other day on route 1 in saugus to buy some used furniture. I saw a used furniture place going next to there cashforyouritems.net is the site. I peeked in the windows and saw some really nice things!! Couches, chairs, rugs, they have a basement evidently as well. Looks great, we need more places like that near the highway . I live in Melrose so it's so close.
Garage Sale by the name sounds so low quality but damn they have some nice things in there!
