We aren't usually fans of "artwork" from big retailers, in part because you know you're going to see lots of it out there in the world. But we must confess a bit of a crush on this bike canvas. It won't be something that we buy but we've found some inspiration in the piece. Can you guess who sells it?...

The Bike Canvas is from Pottery Barn. We've definitely used the stretched-fabric-on-frame idea before to create a large piece of "art" for low cost. But we've never tried taking a graphic image like this one and divvying it up into multiples pieces to create a series. Seems like a fun idea.
This specific piece from Pottery Barn includes four panels with an overall size of 96" x 48". It will run you $279. Check it out here.
ha! my first thought upon seeing the first photo was actually 'pottery barn' based on the styling...it looks like a pottery barn room.

oh pottery barn, why do you do things like this that make me like you oh so much?!? Why?!?

I don't go to Pottery Barn (not that I'm a snob or anything); but it seems to me that the image might be a blowup of an old wood engraving, perhaps from a catalog, c.1900. Just a wild guess, since I can't see the image clearly.
I'm I'm correct, then there must be thousands of similar images free for the taking.

Has anyone seen the episode of Friends when Rachel and Phoebe live together and Rachel keeps buying stuff from PB and saying she got it from a lea market? It cracks me up every time...

i knew it was pottery barn. the couch and styling gave it away. ebanfield, the image is a copyright free image and available on cd-rom from dover publications. just as you say, it's a blowup of an old wood engraving. i've used the same image for an engagement party invitation.

Anyone know where exactly to find the copyright-free image? I've had this giant tandem embroidery project in mind for ages, but I'm not totally happy with the design I sketched out. This seems pretty standard!

OMG!!! I have 3 canvases stashed in my closet, that I didn't know what to do with! My husband and I used an illustration of a tandem bicycle on our wedding invitations. Perfect!!
I will be DIY-ing this!

jmorey:
This would be large enough to use (if you are handy with Photoshop):

You could also try the image gallery at the Library of Congress website. They have large royalty free images, and sometimes original illustrations that are used to apply for patents and such.
Oh the possibilities...

julieleanne - i love that image you linked to, its better than the Pottery Barn image (and i actually prefer the black on cream)... Is this a copyright free image?

I am going to go out on a limb and say no, it is probably not copyright free. However, as long as you don't plan on selling your artwork, or publishing it, you will be safe to use it - aka for personal use only.
Also if you alter the image, it then becomes your intellectual property. Shepard Fairey (the designer who did the infamous Obama Portrait) basically built his entire career on this premise.
