Wall Treatment Inspiration: Sol LeWitt at Mass MoCA

Last year, we wrote about the installation of Sol LeWitt’s wall paintings at Mass MoCA in the Berkshire mountains of northern Massachusetts (a fantastic vacation spot, by the way) and recently we got a chance to see them in person. Much attention has focused on LeWitt’s newer, bold, graphic works, but we were especially impressed by the subtle effects of his earlier monochromatic pieces and line drawings. Many seem like simple fields of gray at first glance, but up-close they reveal intricate textures, patterns and sometimes a multitude of colors...

We love the bright-colored work too, of course, but when we imagine attempting a DIY version, a less conspicuous palette would certainly be easier to live with. If you are in the Northeast, we highly recommend a weekend trip to Mass MoCA in the quaint town of North Adams, Massachusetts. There are three gargantuan floors of Sol LeWitt’s wall paintings, so you’re sure to find at least a few walls that inspire you.
