apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Chalkboard Bathroom at Wieden Kennedy
Dezeen

b&w_bath_4.jpg

What's black and white and read all over? The bathroom at London advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy. Design studio Featherstone Young created this fun, interactive bathroom using simple chalkboard paint. It reminds us of the graffiti-clad bathrooms in our high school, only much easier to erase.

Paired with a quirky vintage style toilet and wall-hung basin, the space-saving design ensures you'll never miss an opportunity to record those brilliant ideas whenever — and wherever — inspiration strikes.

Despite the fact that I think blackboard paint has been overdone already, I really like this. I think it would have gone even better with penny tile flooring: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/tile-stone-countertops/penny-tile-floor-at-the-standard-hotel-notcotcom-088953

Looks like the men's room of a gay leather bar...

Obviously you've never been to the men's room of a gay leather bar. As a person who has, let me tell you... it's NEVER this clean.

This could be in the bathroom of a West Hollywood gay bar, leather not mandatory.

if you bring your own chalk, it's fine. if there's a bowl full of chalk, i don't care how 'gently used' it is, if someone has used it while they were sitting on the crapper, i'm grossed out.

but i've a bit of the ocd... ;)

Khatam--

Oh, I've been to several...

...but the lights are dimmer, my vision is blurred from all the beer I've consumed so I don't notice how clean it is (or isn't) and the trough and sink are usually full of ice.

My favourite W.C. ever was that of an ex-colleague: painted Bright Orange and Dutch royal family portraits and memorabilia as far as the eye could see.
Inspirational! :-)

I am SO amused by all this gay leather bar talk :)

but yes, Foog, I also hope people are writing with the communal chalk AFTER hands have been washed...

Hee! Khatam, you're delightful. And I agree, it needs penny tile!

i have seen this type of bathroom decor in bars where the graffiti was uncontrollable. the chalkboard was their way of mediating everyone's inability to control themselves.

This would be great at a music venue, where kids can write on the bathroom walls with chalk instead of the sharpies they bring to get autographs. I always feel bad for the some venue owners who try to keep things nice, and are constantly repainting the bathrooms because, "Laura hearts James 2/10/08".

bepsf - my apologies. I can see how consumption of alcohol could prevent white glove inspection for most, including myself.

Foog - I didn't even think about that, and while I agree... if I weren't sober I probably wouldn't think about that.

Dimsum - thanks. I will let my boyfriend know, he seems to think I'm crass and a pain in the ....

In this "mobile era" why in god's name would someone want to write or do something on the walls of a bathroom????

Brilliant on paper (or should I say on the chalk drawing board) but a bit claustrophobic in action.

I think this would be a great idea for a bar. So many of them have drunk patrons scratching or writing on the walls and stalls anyway. And I wouldn't worry too much about people sullying any provided chalk with unclean hands. I mean, there's a sink for you right there.

This really is a great idea for bars plagued with graffiti.

And yes, I, too, have visited the bathroom of many a leather bar... oh, the stories I could (but won't) tell.

I think I disagree with this. This could only lead to excessive peeing on the wall to "erase" the writing. I bet after a while the lower portion of the wall would be so pee-logged that you couldn't even write on it.

I've been into a restroom very similar to this at a Pub here in Detroit fully covered with chalkboard paint/chalk, I think it is just awesome and makes perfect sense.
