Mr. Cold Soap Dispenser by Massimo Giacon for Alessi

You think you have it bad when you have a cold — this little guy looks about as stuffed up as we feel this time of year. But he's so adorable in the bathroom that you'll never forget to wash your hands. And oh yeah, you guessed it, the soap runs out his nose!

With all the talk of scary sicknesses this winter, we've been warned by everyone from our mother to Dr. Gupta that we need to wash our hands a lot. We're big fans of liquid soap and we love Alessi's Mr. Cold. It's designed by Italian designer and comic-strip artist Massimo Giacon and we like that it's a refreshing change from the more typical pump dispenser. Mr. Cold isn't the cheapest soap dispenser on the block, but we've had one for about 4 years now and love it. It's nearly unbreakable and is simple to refill (just unscrew his head). Even the younger kids that come over are inspired to use it.

I have the blue one... lovely indeed. And kids think it is cool too!

Nearly unbreakable. Yup. Also nearly un-decomposable. Millennia from now, these -- along w/all the other soap dispensers -- will be clogging landfills. Because you just know that the people who use these will not always be the same people who recycle. Why not a simple bar of soap? What's "cool" is being smart and considering the environment.

Cute? In an endearing way, yes. But to include a reminder of sickness on my bathroom vanity in the role of soap dispenser? Not so much.
