We spotted this tub in the June issue of Metropolitan Home. The bathroom and home, located in upstate New York, was designed by Adam Rolston.
The bathroom is pretty stunning. However, we experience the disparity in height between the floor level tub and the standard level sink to be a little jarring and unsettling. Oh well, guess we'll have to forgo the sunken tub when we eventually update our humble little bathroom.
The entire house is worth checking out at Metropolitan Home: Green Getaway.

i like the sunken tub.

This was quite common in custom homes during the 60's and 70's - I remember as a kid when my folks were looking for a house to purchase in California that many of the houses had sunken tubs.

I feel like all the dirt on the floor would end up in the bathtub.

I'm pretty sure either me or my husband would seriously injure ourselves somehow.

yes, looking cool - but my brother and sis-in-law have one that is only halfway sunken, and it is a bitch to be down on your knees cleaning it, i can tell you …

sunken drunken = dunkin'

sunken plus drunken equals dunkin'

and unless there are steps to get out, I can't imagine exiting this tub is very attractive - ha ha.

It's always been my dream to have a sunken tub. And a sunken living room. So luxurious.

This is just what I want - I sink a tub into my downstairs neighbor's unit. They'll like that and we'll be even closer.

oooo i like both those things! in a house obviously not an apartment.

My mom's guest room had a sunken tub. It was put in there by the previous owners of the house. It was so inconvenient, plus my mom could never put an older person like my grandmother in the guest room because she could never get out of there!

its okay but i think a sunken tub should be in the center of the room, or maybe not in the corner. whats the point of putting it in the corner? plus, i dont think that i would like sitting in the tub with my elbows on the floor.

Love it!!! I usually get in my tub to clean it anyways, and tubs rarely are as deep as my knees. I can see this being difficult for shorter folks (or average height- Im a giant) or elderly though.
And on the 'disparity' of height... Imagine washing your hands in a sunken sink. I think a modern bowl type sink would look best.

My back hurts just looking at this and thinking about cleaning it.

It looks really pretty in this picture and I've seen other tubs like this that are in larger bathrooms that are just beautiful. But I can't help but to think (and maybe it's just the OCD in me speaking) of laying in the tub to relax and find my eyes wandering to the bottom side of the toilet, sink...etc. I keep it clean, but I don't scrub my underside of the sink and pipes all the time. I guess if I had that tub I would notice it more. Just thinking out loud. It would be nice if you had a big spread out bathroom... not where the toilet and sink are so close. I'm rambling. sorry.

I was just thinking the same thing - having a bath with the floor at eye level would allow you to see every little hair and debris on the floor!

Only things I foresee is having to clean the tub completely before getting to use it, no way to take a shower (unless you have the space for a separate one), and people seriously injuring themselves. I'd like to see someone explain that one to the paramedic - he'd have to be very professional not to at least laugh.

Great if it had steps.

Yeah but, Hot air rises....leaving the cold draft to waft across the floor and whoosh your chest as you relax... Bugs me when things aren't practical....

The cleaning would be difficult....but not a deal breaker if I could afford the coolness of the design.

looks nice but I'm too clumsy I would fall in :(

Not sure about the sunken tub (agreed the cold draughts would put me off).
The wall tiles are beautiful on the other hand.

I wouldn't choose this there are enough accidents in bath tubs as it is.

eek! Do not like! Seems very hazardous and plus isn't it kinda nasty that you have to sit on the floor to get in and out?
view ichi's profile
You don't ever sit on your floors? Like, to play board games or play with small children or anything?

Actually I loved the idea of sunken tub its just like a pool. Wonder why most of the people commented negatively!
What an innovative idea! i like the color of the marbles used.

eeka -- Yes people sit on the floors at times. But normally one has clothes on - which means the clothes are getting dirty, not your skin. I wouldn't place my rear on the bathroom floor right after bathing - no matter how many times I cleaned it right before hand.
