apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bookcase Divider with Curtain

We've certainly seen the bookcase-as-divider idea plenty of times on Apartment Therapy. And for good reason: it's the perfect way to create zones in a small space or open floor plan. Interior designer Todd Klein's version of the space dividing bookcase adds a new twist: using a curtain on the bedroom side of the bookcase. See the flip side of the bookcase below the jump...

We spotted this open bookcase and curtain combo, designed by Klein, in the current issue of Elle Decor. Granted we might be particularly enamored with these photos since we clearly like the same color scheme, evidenced by our AT House Tour.

You could use the Ikea Expedit bookcase(s), along with a ceiling mounted curtain to create a similar, affordable version of Klein's high end design.

Have you made something similar in your space, including the curtain element?

Love this. I would totally do that if I had a loft, to separate the spaces.

Somehow - I don't think that a prefab 6' tall bookcase backed by a curtain is going to have the same effect...
...and you would definitely not want to stack a pair of Expedits in the middle of the floor - unless you're just asking for trouble.

I have seen similar storage cubes at target for less, and I think that they are actually designed to be stacked.

I like this idea. Even if it wasn't used at a divider it would be brilliant. It would literally take seconds to put the clutter of a bookcase out of sight.
