Bill & Natalie's Serene Treetop Renovation
House Tour

BedroomStairDeck.jpg

Name: Bill and Natalie
Location: Jamaica Plain, MA
Size: 2250 sq ft
Years lived in: Owned 7 years

Peace is among the more ephemeral of spacial qualities — a fleeting moment captured, for instance, in 20-minutes of soft, yellow sunset washing across a bedroom wall. Peacefulness is something most of us stumble upon but, in Bill & Natalie's Jamaica Plain home, it seems every room was designed with peace in mind...

JP-Thumbnails.jpg

After a 7-month renovation, which included a full attic conversion into a master bedroom suite with rooftop deck, this artist and graphic designer duo have a delightfully serene place to call home. The clean lines of the furniture, the warm yet neutral color story, and the old bones of the house work together to create a distinctly contemporary yet easy and inviting feel. We love the unique touches like the stained glass window in the entryway, the antique Chinese cabinet in the guest bedroom, and the stunning, sailboat-inspired wood wall cap on the bedroom deck (above), finished with epoxy and varnish.

We'll have much more from Bill & Natalie's Jamaica Plain renovation in an upcoming before and after post — stay tuned!

AT Survey

Our style: Contemporary mixed with some antiques

Inspiration: Functional beauty

Favorite Element: Attic conversion into master suite

Biggest Challenge: Contractor communication and supervision

What Friends Say: They say that the interior is striking and comfortable, and that the house is actually larger than it appears from the outside

Biggest Embarrassment: We have 3 different kinds of flooring wood on 1st floor, the integration of which was done poorly.

Proudest DIY: Creation of the master closet system using IKEA panels

Biggest Indulgence: Counter tops in the kitchen and master bath

Best advice: Live in your house for a while before you decide what to change and how to renovate

Dream source: Personal travel and life experiences

First, I love that there are actual indicators of human beings living there (other than the shots of people). Second, your house looks delightfully clean! Lovely, soothing colors throughout.

Very beautiful! Love the colors and the clean lines! The only thing that leaves me uninspired is the artwork. It fits well in the home, but seems like it was chosen as decor to complete a room rather than as individual pieces collected over time. But, that's just my personal preference for paintings and art that are more stand-alone pieces. Overall, I love it!!!

I like the combination of green with dark wood - it's always a winner.

My only suggestion is that you might like to rearrange your art. At the moment it feels a little mechanical, a sort of art - doorway - art - window - art - cupboard - art progression around the rooms. I'd like to see them clustered more, like putting the glossy 3D organic pieces together. As most of them are fairly small I think they'll have more impact that way.

I think it's very calming but I thought it odd that three of the more interesting pieces of artwork (presumably most are their works of art) are in a hallway while artwork with far less detail are in more public rooms in the home.

Perhaps this is on purpose? I don't know but when in someone's home I rarely spend time lingering in a hallway. A different way to display artwork for sure.

It certainly is a sanctuary. Proof that less can be more yet not stark like some homes you see.

The art is strangely arranged to me. Plus the bedroom seems kind of bland. Other than that, it's good.

LOVELY. I actually just registered for Apartment Therapy so that I could say that! These rooms convey a sense of peace, harmony, and warmth that I hope to create. I love out the dark, rich color on the floors makes the pale, neutral colors on the walls feel vibrant.

This is also making me rethink light green, although unfortunately I doubt light green would look good with white tile!

Definitely not my style personally but it all looks great. I can see a lot of personality in everything. And the home itself is pretty beautiful.

Great job making this your own.
Clean and spacious. Comfortable. Unpretentious.

(I'm very pretentious so that's what I meant by "not my style). Hehe.

Wow, Great Home!
I think the art is fantastic and perfect as displayed/hung- It is very sculptural and deserves the space to be seen. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to seeing more of your home/reno.

I liked the art too, but its placement in the stairwell isn't quite right.

Beautiful home.

I'm especially in love with all your color choices! Also, I wouldn't be embarrassed by mismatched floors..I think it's one of the charms of an older home, showing how it's changed over the years. Thank you for sharing!

What materials and where did you get the railing materials going up the stairs, and perhaps outside?

Love it. If it's just pipe, I'm even happier!

LOVE the artwork. It's very nice to see something other than a collage of cutesy prints and vintage woodblock posters.

Hrm.. first post didnt post.

Anyway, LOVE the artwork - especially the paintings. Simple - but not. LOVE IT. And therefore was very sad to see the Bill Thompson exhibits at Barbara Krakow Gallery. Alongside Sol LeWit, Chuck Close, and many other artists that I cannot afford. Damn.

what a fantastic homey feel. wonderful job. everything is perfectly balanced from the black and white art to the pops of nature. among those details, the windows, open doors and skylights really make this place what it it: Cozy, inviting, warm, comfortable, fun.

The stained glass window is magnificent - sets the tone of the home. I enjoyed every angle - thank you for taking photos that show a home that is "lived in" - a job well done!

Love the artwork and think it's totally appropriate for hallways and stairs - why not make the journey between rooms enjoyable?

Kudos also on houseplants - so often overlooked but does wonders to make a space feel alive (literally).

Great job, guys!

Especially like the art pieces installed in the staircase - it draws me to discover what's in store upstairs.
Also, I wish we could know more about the closet system in the master bedroom, some partially open and closed pics, and some of how you've outfitted the inside. Do you have pull-rods on all 6 (it looks like 6, anyway) panels? Do you have to position the dark middle panels at just the right place, or is there an automatic "stop" for them? I wander by them at Ikea, but haven't seem them in such a great installation before.

Really nice home, restrained and yet personal.

Gorgeous: serene, soothing, not over-done.

I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the artist who made the framed piece in the hallway looking into the guest bedroom? (slide 13, I think "12_HallToGuest")?

Thanks for sharing your lovely home with us!

I love the master bedroom the most! The light green wall color, the cacti blending perfectly with that yet also making a little focal point of their own. I love that they kept the bedroom pretty bare. I think no rugs or knick-knacks encourages a feeling of serenity. AND, I always LOVE attic renovations...There's something so cozy and just a little different about the sloping walls that I heart!

Who are these nincompoops who don't like the art in the hallways? I think it's a delightfully whimsical touch, specifically the sculptural wall art leading to the upstairs bedroom. It's my favorite thing about your home.
Thanks for sharing.
