DIY Silhouette Shams

IMG_4600.jpg

Silhouettes are everywhere these days and we’ve seen silhouette pillows aplenty before, but we thought these personalized shams were a fun and less-preppy alternative to the standard monogram pillow. Plus, in case you are prone to forget or are too tipsy to remember, they are a nice reminder of whose side of the bed is whose. And they are a cinch to make yourself if you have a scanner and a printer — keep reading below the jump for instructions...

Materials
Standard Shams
Inkjet Iron On Transfer Paper
Paper, Pencil, Sharpie, Scissors
Seam Binding (optional)

1. Follow these instructions from AT San Francisco for creating your silhouettes. Either cut them out of black paper or just trace them on to white paper and color them in with black sharpie.

2. Scan the silhouettes onto your computer. Adjust the contrast in Photoshop if you know how — the more solid the black is, the better the result will be.

3. Print out the silhouettes on Iron On Transfer Paper.

4. Cut out the silhouettes as close to the edge as possible. It’s okay to leave a small border around them.

5. Follow the instructions on the Transfer paper to iron the silhouettes onto the shams.

6. To create a square border around the shams, pin seam binding in a square around each silhouette and sew it on.

The headboard is actually a folding screen that was purchased in NYC's Chinatown about ten years ago. Unfortunately, that's all we know about it!
