Etsy Find: Vintage Botanical Prints Under $25

We love botanical illustration — the scientific precision of rendering a completely organic form has always held an intrigued contrast for us. And, for folks without a green thumb or the space / light to keep living plants, they provide a zero maintenance alternative for decorating with plant life. Massachusetts Etsy seller ethanollie has a lovely collection of small botanical prints for sale, all under $25...

The prints are gorgeous, but make me nervous. They look like they have been cut out of books (note the ragged left edge on some of the close-ups). Maybe the books were otherwise damaged and these prints were salvaged...but I don't really like the idea of cutting up books to hang something on a wall. Maybe because I once had a job where I spent HOURS fixing damaged caused by someone who razored prints out of very rare and valuable books from a library. I'm *not* saying that the seller is doing that, but still...I'd prefer a reproduction!

I used to sell books on eBay, and most of the time if the book was damaged but the prints were fine, it made the book unsellable. Better that this seller take the prints out and reuse them than that the book be thrown out.

Loads of antique stores have entire bins of this exact thing: great prints pulled from antique books that are so damaged they're no longer "valuable."

it is sad when an old book is dying, so saving at least the good parts should be a good thing. at least the prints get a new life, and people can enjoy them. not every book can be saved, and really, as much as i love books - not every book should be saved, or we would drown in a never ending avalanche of old books (says somebody who has a walls full of books, btw.).
