apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Find: Desperately Seeking Duvet

02_11_Flickr1.jpg

We love perusing Flickr for Apartment Therapy Boston tags, checking up on fellow New England DIY'ers. We stumbled across this deep purple wall bedroom in ashxnm72's eclectic condo and were drawn in by her plea for help with a duvet. Follow the jump to see a bit more of her great pad and voice your opinion on what duvet could help finish this space...

She's got some great vintage fiberglass shell chairs in her living room and a rocking chandelier in the foyer. We want to hear your bedding suggestions to really tie this space together.

I think the Dwell "Talon" duvet cover or something similarly graphic yet organic would look great with the purple accent wall and complement the MCM/H'wood Regency thing they've got going on with the fiberglass chair and mirrored table elsewhere in the condo.

You're really talking about a duvet COVER, right?

I know this isn't a duvet cover but I think this would look really good in your bedroom...

Assuming they ever get it in stock again...

I'm thinking something in a dark charcoal gray.

If you are looking for a duvet cover won't you want more than one?

This is cute from Target-
http://www.target.com/Purple-Duvet-Sets/dp/B001N137W8/qid=1234389600/ref=br_1_9/178-4619187-7724329?ie=UTF8&node=1101048&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

Or I would go with ALL White duvet and sheets. Then add dark charcoal grey shams, and a few cushions in various colors- another shade of deep purple, deep pink with chocolate or robins egg blue or a throw in one of these colors.

I do have a Ikea white duvet cover that I use in the warmer months, it has served me well. I use really good sheets (not from Ikea) in white and pale blue.

Look at some of their white duvets, this was cute too with a pattern-

The ones from Bliss seem nice, but also consider this one from Amenity:

You can find them in online stores for a bit less. That's what I ended up doing when I bought my cover and pillows (I have Cove in cream and moss).

$300 plus for a duvet cover? I'd head over to the local thrift shop or Value Village and see what you could come up with. I found a fabulous retro orange/purple/yellow crazy print that would have gone fabulously with this room....at about 10% of some of the covers listed here.

Bluefly currently has Dwell duvet sets on sale, and the Essex is a great rich yellow color which would look fantastic with that purple wall. It comes with a duvet cover and pillow set, which you could pair with some nice white fitted sheets. I bought this myself a few months ago and trimmed it down to the full size that I needed - the extra fabric worked out to a few extra pillowcases. Here's the link for queen and king sizes. http://www.bluefly.com/Dwell-queen-duvet-set---saffron-Essex-320TC-Egyptian-cotton/SEARCH/300648401/detail.fly

Can you sew? A duvet cover is super easy to make, and you could have some super-luxurious fabric for the cost of an off-the rack duvet cover.

I second LoriSF on the Target duvet cover. That one is what jumped into my mind as soon as I saw your accent wall.

this in grey? to see it in a room, search for "bacon" in the apartmenttherapy website. i think one of the bloggers took a picture of her room (she has this duvet cover and a dog named bacon)

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of your suggestions and comments. I feel like I've been searching for a bed covering forever. I would prefer a duvet cover, but I would just as happily consider a bedspread or comforter if it works with the room. Originally I was considering several of the options that you guys have mentioned. I love the Anthropologie quilts as well as the Amenity and Bliss bedding, but I have started accumlating alot of colorful pillows, so I'm now contemplating all white bedding with the pillows as the accent. This one: http://www.westelm.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?partNumber=WE-PRODb437&storeId=17001&langId=-1&catalogId=17002&viewSetCode=E&parentId=WE-SH1BEDDUV&retainNav=true&cmsrc=WE-SH1BEDDUV and this one: http://www.westelm.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?partNumber=WE-PRODb340&storeId=17001&langId=-1&catalogId=17002&viewSetCode=E&parentId=WE-SH1BEDDUV&retainNav=true&cmsrc=WE-SH1BEDDUV are my top contenders, although I love the pattern on this quilt: http://pillowsandthrows.com/inhspamdc.html. The price tag makes me think twice though. What do you guys think about these options? And thanks again for all of your input! I'll be sure to let you know what I come up with. Ashley

Oh! I forgot to address Shushi's comment. The paint is Benjamin Moore and the color is Eggplant.

have you looked at the bedding at Urban Outfitters? it has a vintage mod feel, which seems like your style... had one for years, loved it

Ashley --

I think your own instincts are great -- I especially like the parachute one in white for your room. It would be dramatic but not over-the-top.

I have to admit that I don't much care for printed designs on duvet covers and bedding -- I find that I get tired of them easily, and that they look dated quite quickly.

When I first saw your room, I thought pale blue (perhaps in a fine damask cotton), white or a natural linen colour (in linen) would be gorgeous.

This bed by Eileen Fisher would look stunning (although it is quite expensive), and it coordinates well with your kitty ( :-) always good!):

And Libeco Home is a great source for simple beautiful linen bedding:

That eggplant color has Marimekko written all over it--- and you're in luck C&B just rolled out the traditional Marimekko prints. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1624&f=29337. Pair it with some complementary colors and it'll look wonderful.

I Immediately thought of white to keep it fresh, and not to dark. I like your west elm choice. What about this one from Restoration Hardware
http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1300007&navCount=0

The structure and sophistication of the blue embroidery would be a nice background for your eclectic array of pillows. Plus like someone else said, patterns tire and date easily. Good luck!
