Glass-Filled Towel Rods by Designer Rods

Honestly, we're not entirely sure how we feel about these towel rods, but we're fascinated by the idea. And if we had to pick one, it would definitely be the multi-colored marble filled one. We think it would be neat if they just sold empty rods and you could think of your own goodies to put in there — the options would be endless!

There are nineteen different filling options for the 18 or 24 inch rod, and eight styles of end pieces. The designer primarily uses sea glass and marbles, along with some sea shell options. Designer Rods also offers a towel ring, toilet paper holder, and robe hook. The rods are pricey - $239 a rod.

This might be a tough design element to pull off successfully but we applaud most ideas that think outside the box. Now we'll just ponder all the things we'd put in our empty rod...

This idea is really similar to the plungers in Punch Drunk Love.

I like them. The price is outrageous though. I think there's a DIY solution.

Too fussy, especially at that price.

If you have towels on them you won't be able to see whats inside...so what is the point?

The idea is cute. Maybe for a kids bathroom, but yeah, not at that price.

I could definitely see a DIY with clear acrylic tubing and off the shelf end brackets (or even curtain rod brackets).

I would put dried herbs in them (long ones like thyme and rosemary) and use them in the kitchen/potting shed

Just spend the money on some colorful towels. A bunch of them.

I love them. Mine would have sea glass in them.

Or maybe candy. Lifesavers? Red Hots?

The best thing about this design is the material used to fill the rods - just look at those marbles - so why not save yourself about $200, buy normal towel rods, and get some beautiful marbles to display in a jar or vase.

Very much not worth the price.

Overkill on hardware that should be unobtrusive. However, beautiful marbles are beautiful marbles. Putting them in a jar or vase is a stronger idea, and putting the money in a 401(k) a sounder idea.

Could be a good place to put grandma's fake pearls that you don't wear but don't want to throw away.

It can easily be DIYd with hardware from Home Depot and polycarbonate or acrylic tubing.

Mailorder source for acrylic tubing: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/category.asp?catalog_name=USPlastic&category_name=21315&Page=1

If you're in NYC, there are a few shops that sell the tubing custom cut on Canal Street near Pearl Art.
