Good Question: Can You Identify This Table?

03_18_GQ.jpgHi AT! I was wondering if anyone can identify or give a date for this sofa table. It looks maybe Art Deco to me, but I don't know much about furniture. I've been thinking about painting the brass frame white to fit in better with my living room, but I don't want to accidentally ruin a perfectly good vintage piece. Any thoughts? Anna

uhhh...whether vintage or not, I would paint it. Rather than vintage, I'm thinking Maurice Villency.

It's not Deco -- it's '70s-'80s.

Check the post on Nate Berkus' apartment in Milan.

While Maurice has negative 80's connotations, have you been there recently? I was shocked to see that EVERY coffee table in their showroom was at least 3k!

I agree though, looks 70's-80's ish.

Maurice was always pricey. Go Maurice! A certain type of lady purchased Maurice...watch Goodfellas where Ray Liotta's girlfriend shows off all her new "Maurice Vallencia" furniture.

I have something similar (but smaller), and the person I bought it from had spray-painted the legs silver. It makes it look a lot better, check it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/daniella_jaeger/2686965492/in/set-72157606281656981/.

There was post a little while back about a product you could buy at the autoparts store that would remove the brass finish and reveal the pretty shiny chrome under it. That would be my thought. And then, maybe paint the underside of the glass table top with black paint. That'll look hot.
It's totally 80's.
If someone can find the post on the chrome finishing, can you link it here? I never seem to be able to find what I'm looking for with the search tool.

It looks more 80s Deco than 30s Deco. If it is from the 30s, it will be very heavy and there's likely to be lumpier welds on the joins. If it's relatively light and looks very machined, it's probably 80s.

In answer to your other question, when was the last time you saw a piece of home-painted brass and thought to yourself, "Wow, that looks classy."?

If you do paint it, I would consider taking it to an auto-body shop and have them spray it with white or black. I'm not sure about the details of doing this, but I have heard that it works out well. I have never done it myself, but if I had that table that is what I would try to do. Also your color choices are only limited to auto paint so if you can find someone to do it, you could make it really funky. Just a thought.

Oops, I was quoting Piztachio above. Needed quotation marks around the last paragraph!

you seem like a nice person who is looking for good advice... please don't put any money or time into trying to improve the look of that table

I agree with sunan. I'm sure everyone was trying to add a bit of humor to their posts, while being informative. The point is...this is an example of what is widely considered to be tacky 1980s Art Deco INSPIRED design. It is not good looking in my opinion and I would not own it. I certainly hope you did not pay a lot of money for it. If somehow I acquired this piece (i.e. someone GAVE it to me), I would donate it to the Goodwill or the Salvation Army. You can do much better than this.
