Good Question: Fitted Sheet Fiasco — Help!

04-14_GQ.jpgWe have a minor problem that is causing me and my partner serious stress — hopefully the AT crowd can give us some ideas so we can keep our sanity. Our fitted sheet(s) will not stay put! We've tried several different sheet types and thread counts but I think it's us, not the sheets. We both prefer tight fitted sheets but we just can't keep all four corners tucked in!

We sleep on a full size bed and currently have only tried full size sheets — should we move up to queen size sheets? Will the extra length stay tucked in or will it just be more material to come loose?? Is there some DIY contraption I could build to keep the fitted sheet pulled taunt beneath the mattress? I know this isn't the typical AT question but we can't possibly be the only sleep partners with this problem...right? We'll try anything! Thanks, Sean & Cindy

It sounds like an easy fix. You are probably not using a sheet with the right depth for your mattress. How many inches deep is your mattress? You need to find a fitted sheet that will accommodate that depth and you should be fine.

Try fitted sheet suspenders. They are straps that lie beneath the mattress at each corner, to hold the sheets in place. You can Google them to find several suppliers. They're also available on Amazon.com.

One or both of you must be clawing at the sheets at night.

My husband does this, too-- his corners are often pulled off by morning, while mine are never upset.

I suggest either large safety pins or therapy.

If you are using a full size bed, instead of using full size fitted, try king or queen size flat sheet. tuck the sheet under the mattress. We've had success with that. You also get the added benefit of never having to fold a fitted sheet again. Folding flat sheets is so much easier. We've also had some mixed results, mostly good, with those clips that you put on the corners

I have a full size mattress with queen fitted sheets it is not a tight fit so that is not the answer. Why not try a feather bed on your mattress, when the sheet is put on over both the mattress and feather bed it will make the sheets more taut and provide you with more comfortable sleep.

The sheet suspenders that Doug mentioned are widely available. Here in NYC you can find them at the dollar store. Coincidentally I am going to buy some for my own sheets today.

I used to have this problem too, but there is a really easy solution!
You just need to buy some clips to hold them in place.

Also, the pillowcases that come with Best-fit sheets are envelope style, in case you have trouble keeping your pillowcases on too (I do).

aye aye, we have the same problem. or rather, my fiance has the problem of pulling the sheets off and i have the problem of putting them back on again every morning. there was a post about using binder clips to hold the sheet to the mattress, but i had no luck with it. guess it's time to try the sheet grippers.

I have four little cylindrical plastic thingies with a slot cut out of them. Once you put on your fitted sheet, you slide these onto the piping at the bottom of your mattress. They hold the sheet in place. But... they're visible. The sheet suspender idea sounds better.

Another vote for the sheet suspender clips... used them in college when the sheets kept popping off those crummy dorm mattresses.

My husband and I had a similar problem and we tried differect sheets until we found this one (cheap!) from Target that stays put. Not the highest thread count sheets out there, but not waking up in a tangled mess made the trade off well worth it for us.

We have the same problem and I found that a matress pad goes a long way towards solving this problem. Combined with sheet suspenders, and you should be in good shape!

Sheet suspenders, for starters. I've also seen thin foam corner-shaped things that go over the corners of the mattress to provide traction. If you're not using a mattress pad, get one; a slippery synthetic mattress surface doesn't hang on to sheets very well. My mother uses diaper pins to hold the sheets on, so you could consider that as well.

Seems silly, but measure your mattress and make sure it's a standard full. I had a beastly time getting my sheets to fit for a long time, and I only found the answer when I bought a new bed frame. My mattress was about 3 inches longer than a standard full (we noticed when it was 3 inches too long for the brand new bed frame). Now that I have a new, normal mattress, everything seems to stay put.

You also need to use a thick mattress pad - I suggest the luxury mattress pads from Lands End.

Are you purchasing sheets that have elastic all the way around? If not, you need to upgrade to sheets that have elastic on all 4 sides, not just top and bottom.

Larger fitted sheets will not work - but flat sheets will work if you use California King sheets (to allow for plenty of tuck-under fabric on all 4 sides)

It really sounds to me like the sheets aren't big enough for the depth of your mattress. I swear by Lands End sheets. They are the only ones I use. Excellent quality, and the fitted sheets have elastic all the way around. I have never, ever had a Lands End sheet pull off the mattress.

We had that problem and getting deeper sheets did solve it. I got the Hotel sheets from Macys, but any that are described as extra deep should work.

Even if you don't have an extra deep mattress, get an extra deep fitted sheet... I got mine at the Company Store and it's great b/c the elastic goes all the way around and tucks and tightens under the mattress. Kind of like if you pulled a shower cap down over your entire head (do not try this at home). Good luck!

I've basically given up on fitted sheets. After washing and putting them in the dryer, they shrink and never fit the same...even if they're taken out of the dryer damp and aired dry. Now, I buy regular top sheets in a size or two larger and do hospital corners...or just tuck in as best as possible.
