Hi AT! It seems like readers of this site can do almost anything, so this should be an easy one. I am trying to improve my front entrance on a budget of $100 max. I have 2 plain glass doors and would like to add some interest by inserting an external grid. The doors are Terma-Tru and do not come with grill holes where a grid can be inserted. Are there other inexpensive ways of accomplishing this? has anyone tried it? Do you have vendor recommendations that could be in my budget? Thanks, Yelena

instead of having a real grid inserted, what about etching a grid onto the glass? or even a pattern, not necessarily a grid? etching acid can be had from any hobby or craft store and is relatively inexpensive, or you can opt for the film [perhaps one with a pattern?] that applies directly to the glass but is not permanent...

The link below has some beautiful window films with etched-like designs. I never thought I would like this type of thing, but these ones are really pretty:

Personally, I'd leave it be and put some interesting plants along the outside, if that's possible. Make a view to frame.
The moroccan tile film is cool, though.

I like the idea of window films. Although if you are really thinking about doing a grid, I know that some manufacturer's provide a double sided tape grid which can be applied directly to the glass on both sides of the door.
I would see if the therma-tru website has that kind of an option. Or see if Lowe's or Home Depot have applied grids available for sale.

I saw on (I think) This Old House years ago rubber trim that you can affix to a glass window to create the look of frames. Unfortunately, I don't have a link.

I second the window film idea. I think you could do something really interesting like a gradation. I'd section the door into thirds, choose a color you like then put three shades of that color up. It would be modern, give a pop of color, be a focal point, give privacy and still let light in.

Don't do the faux grid. Those always look so cheap and, well... fake.
There are endless ways to liven up your entry. For starters, how about painting the doors an interesting color? Is privacy an issue? The window films are nice, but you could also do some interesting etching. Years ago I saw a home that had French doors in the bathrooms. The owner had taken some beautiful sheer fabrics and used Mod Podge to adhere them to the windows -- it was very lovely and ethereal. And don't forget the power of plants and accessories outside the door.
Perhaps if you include an actual photo of your current entry, readers could offer more specific advice.

If you're looking for the cottage look that's great, however they are a real pain to clean.
