Good Question: Lighting for No-Outlet Living Room?

04_16_GQ.jpg

Hi, I just moved into my new studio space and while I love the industrial feel, I don't love the overhead lighting. The other problem is that the place is pretty big and my living room area is right in the middle of a big cement floor with no outlets in it and no walls close by. If I want to use lamps I'm going to have to run long unsightly cords. So my question is, are the lighting solutions that I'm not aware of? Battery operated blocks that glow? Solar powered jars? Candles seem like a very high maintenance solution to a daily problem! I'm at a loss... Thanks, Margaret

(And, sorry: I didn't want to make it seem like I memorized the website, or was mad about seeing this post again. It just felt...familiar.)

What a rad space, congrats. I think if I lived there I might do one of two things: 1) place random coordinated rugs overlapping in a semi-haphazard fashion towards at least one wall that you might run a flat cord beneath or 2) convert your overhead pendants into some kind of creative floor to ceiling light installation or simply lower a few interesting light fixtures strategically over side tables at the height of a tall table lamp. Just my initial thoughts. You've done a great job so far!

Nice one bangs, I thought it looked familiar too but I wasn't sure if I'd seen it here before or if I was just having a psychic flash ;O

that's definitely what I thought too - I guess they didn't like the answers they got the first time around.

Plug in a simple bulb type light - with no fancy pendant - just wire and a bulb (I saw those in this web site). Then run a long cord along the wall, up to the ceiling, have it drop/weave a bit, so that it's not tightly attached to the ceiling. Then have it hand over the sitting area. The trick is not to hide the fact that it's running all the way from the other side. I think it would fit your industrial style.

I also saw lamps that are just a bulb on a long wire, and a bubble-looking thing over it.

I really like the apt, by the way.

adding to my comment ^
you could even have a very bright wire - orange, purple, or black.

I definitely agree with the comment above, a ceiling-to-floor light sculpture, or a simple light box/column framed roughly, fill it with a couple fluorescent fixtures and then skin it with polycarb panels.

BTW, I dig the paintings. Did you do them?

i have the same problem, and used the loudest orange cord i could find, so it almost makes and art piece look, running up a wall and over to my pendant, the orange cord continues down to a plain socket with one of the those pretty edison light bulbs in it. i get compliments all the time on it...

I was thinking what jacksonlalande said: run wires to hang overhead lights, but instead of hanging them in the middle of the space, suspend them over the end tables as though they were table lamps.

Since you have an industrial space, why not embrace that fact and show the path. Don't just run the wire, place it in a metal conduit as is normally done in industrial spaces.

I vote with guerilla......if you're going to do industrial, then embrace that.

Otherwise......I'd actually try building a big platform for the livingroom, with some outlets in the sides of the platform. Have one or two giant orange cords to the platform.

You could carpet the platform, that would help warm the place up a bit, dampen sound, and give your joints and feet a break from all that concrete.

Gaffer tape and thick rugs.

Also, think about building a wire grid that you can suspend from the ceiling, then learn how to make your own extension cords to string around and drop down at will. You already have that big ladder---so the chore is half done.

I also agree with the ceiling light suggestions.

Something like this would be cool:

You could also also try pencil spotlights from the walls. They throw a thin beam which you could aim at the center.
