Good Question: Similar Style Desk in Lighter Finish?

04_09_GQ.jpg

Hi AT! I’m looking for a desk that will fit into a small, bright room (light, warm yellow walls with white trim, really sunny). Ideally the desk width should be only 4-5 feet to fit into the space. I really like the arts and crafts and mission style but everything I’m finding in that style is too dark. I really like the simplicity of this Bungalow Desk at Crate and Barrel but the finish is really dark. I’m worried it will be too heavy for such a bright, cheery room. Any idea where I might be able to find similar lines but in a lighter finish? Thanks, Jennifer

Thanks for your question, Jennifer! Anyone have a tip on similar, open-frame desks in a lighter finish?

If you don't find anything to match what you're looking for, you could buy this set and recover the seat in something cheerier, and lay some bright fabric or wall paper on the desk and put glass over it. It's a very nice set...

If you are a DIYer, you could buy a similar unfinished desk from...well, we have a few stores down here that sell Amish furniture, and I have seen stores elsewhere that sell nothing but unfinished pieces. They should be listed in the phone book. (Or google maps.)

Then you could stain it whatever finish you wanted...even clear.

Check out the Shelby writing desk from Mitchell Gold Bob Williams. It has the same lines but is in a lighter wood and not as bulky as the Crate and Barrel desk: http://www.mgbwhome.com/shelby_dsk.asp

There are two at Overstock.com

Don't buy them all, i may want one soon. :-)

Note: Even if the picture is a dark color, double check the options... most come in walnut and a white.

It sounds like this desk would be perfect in your space. It would contrast nicely with your light walls and white trim.

I used to have this desk from Target and I loved it:

http://www.target.com/Modern-Desk-Natural/dp/B000X5SFLS/qid=1239291161/ref=br_1_14/185-5945595-0061041?ie=UTF8&node=3527981&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=target&field-browse=3527981&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=7

It's actually a good deal warmer in color than it looks in the non-context photo.

It's a beautiful desk! If you can't find anything you like better, I think the heaviness could be mitigated with a different chair, desk lamp, artwork, and a carpet, perhaps. I like the idea of mixing finishes, myself. The chair and desk together are definitely on the dark and heavy side, as it stands.

Target is even having a furniture sale right now... I think they had some interesting mission pieces. I know they aren't quite as cool looking as yours.

I second the 'Look for some Amish furniture in your area' they have some amazing pieces in those places.

My sister swears by her Target Mission style desk.

(She hates the white faux bamboo one I am currently stalking on Craigslist.)

There are a lot of old library tables floating around antique stores and Craigslist. They tend to be relatively small and made out of golden oak, frequently in mission style. They often strongly resemble the desk in the photo, down to the cross piece below, where you could store a computer tower or files. Do a Google image search of "antique library table" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Seriously - I see these ALL THE TIME when I'm antiquing, in the $100 - $300 range.

Good luck!
